4th June should officially be known as Royal Burpee Day!
In an age where it seems every day of the year is dedicated to something, I'd like to propose that we honour the birthday of a man who has had as much impact on the world of fitness as anyone: Dr Royal H. Burpee.
The humble burpee is loved by some, dreaded by many, and widely regarded as a self-inflicted form of torture. Few exercises can guarantee breathlessness, burning muscles, sweating and occasional feelings of nausea quite so efficiently!
The origins of this incredible full-body exercise may surprise you. It was created by the wonderfully named Royal Burpee, a US Naval Ensign and Doctor of Physiology. Looking at his photograph, you might assume he was a tough-as-nails physical training instructor who devised the exercise to separate the strong from the weak. But you'd be wrong.
The burpee was originally designed as a mobility assessment. Its purpose was simply to evaluate a person's ability to get up from the floor and to measure recovery and general fitness. It wasn't until the 1960s that the US military began using it as a more demanding conditioning tool.
And those original burpees were a far cry from the monsters we know today. There were no energy-sapping jumps, no press-ups, no lunges, tuck jumps or any of the other creative variations that fitness instructors have added over the years in their quest to make us question our life choices.
So today, on what would have been his 127th birthday, let's raise a sweat in honour of Dr Royal Burpee and celebrate Royal Burpee Day.
As for my bootcamp... we'll definitely be celebrating tonight. 💪😈
