A huge well done to Sue in Urology at Bassetlaw Hospital, who has been recognised by a patient for the compassionate care she provided 🌟

In their touching feedback, the patient wrote: "I was diagnosed with kidney cancer in April 2026 and had a nephrectomy to remove the tumour. After this operation I had a catheter inserted and metal staples were holding the five incisions together from the laparoscopy. I struggled a lot with the catheter and was in a lot of pain as I was possibly allergic to the staples.

"Sue agreed to take the staples out at the same time as the catheter removal to save me having to attend 2 separate appointments.

"During my appointment Sue was reassuring and empathetic. I had an unexpected period which I felt embarrassed about but Sue did not make me feel uncomfortable. She knew I was in a lot of pain when the staples were removed and was extremely kind.

"A week later, Sue called out of the blue to ask how I was. I had since developed a UTI which I was trying to ride out and when I informed her of this, she spoke to the consultant on duty and arranged for a prescription of antibiotics to be issued to me immediately which would not interfere with my blood thinning injections.

"Sue's warmth, kindness and genuine empathy was massively appreciated. This was ( is) a time where I was still processing the trauma of my diagnosis and operation, and where I felt emotionally quite vulnerable, and also physically battered and bruised from the procedures I had recently undergone.

"I would like to thank Sue from the bottom of my heart. What was probably a routine appointment for her, made such a huge difference to me and I would like her to be recognised for this."

Thank you, Sue, for providing such compassionate and thoughtful care to this patient – it clearly made a huge difference to them ❤️

A fantastic milestone for the Mexborough Elective Orthopaedic Centre (MEOC) – more than 1,000 joint replacement operations completed since opening in 2024.

And that’s not the only achievement being celebrated.

MEOC has also received national Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) Accreditation, recognising the high standards of care, safety and clinical practice provided to patients, as the centre marks its second anniversary.

Behind these milestones are teams from Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust and Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, working together to help patients from across South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire receive planned orthopaedic surgery.

For many of those patients, a new hip or knee can mean less pain, greater independence and getting back to the activities they enjoy.

If you’ve been one of the more than 1,000 patients cared for at MEOC, we’d love to hear how you’re doing.

Share your experience in the comments and help us celebrate the colleagues who cared for you.

How do you say thank you after a lifetime of caring?

In 1961, Matron Janet Hunter retired after more than three decades of service.

She was presented with a beautifully embroidered tablecloth covered in the signatures of nurses she had trained and inspired.

It's a touching reminder that the greatest legacy any colleague leaves isn't a building, it's the people whose lives they've shaped.

Children and young people are helping to shape how paediatric care is delivered at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, with the service receiving ‘Child Friendly’ status from Doncaster Council.

The recognition follows an assessment by Doncaster’s Young Advisors, who reviewed evidence, met with the team and carried out a virtual inspection to see how children and young people are involved in their care and the development of services.

Following the inspection, the Young Advisors awarded the Trust a ‘Consulted Child Friendly’ rating, praising the team for ensuring “young people who use Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals are at the forefront of every decision and consideration.”

They praised the wide range of opportunities available for young people to influence their own care and the future development of services.

Among the areas of outstanding practice identified was the launch of the Trust’s new Youth Voice Group, which brings together young people to share their experiences and help shape future services.

Young Advisors commended the development of a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) room in Children’s Outpatients, which was co-designed with young people and families after visits to sensory spaces and local SEND schools to understand what would make the greatest difference.

The assessment praised the Trust’s commitment to supporting young people through major milestones in their healthcare, including its use of the Ready, Steady, Go, Hello programme to help young patients transition from children to adult services.

Further positive findings included the Trust’s work to involve patients and families in decision-making, provide information in a range of accessible formats and collaborate with education, social care and community partners to reduce health inequalities.

The Young Advisors concluded that the Trust had demonstrated “a great example of child friendly” and commended colleagues for their dedication to making children and young people feel included, listened to and supported throughout their care.

Karen Jessop, Chief Nurse at DBTH, said: “We are incredibly proud to receive this recognition, particularly because it has been awarded by young people themselves. Their experiences and opinions are invaluable in helping us continually improve the care we provide.

“This accreditation reflects the commitment of colleagues across our paediatric services to ensuring children, young people and their families are listened to, involved in decisions about their care and feel welcome every time they visit our hospitals.

“While we’re delighted to have achieved Child Friendly status, we also recognise there is always more we can do and look forward to building on the feedback from the Young Advisors as we continue to develop our services.”

The Child Friendly initiative forms part of Doncaster Council’s ambition to become a Child Friendly City, celebrating organisations that actively champion the voices, rights and experiences of children and young people.

As part of the accreditation, DBTH will receive a follow-up review in six months’ time to monitor progress and support further improvements.

The accreditation comes shortly after Children and Young People’s Services at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals were rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), following inspections earlier this year. Inspectors rated services as ‘Good’ across all five assessment areas – Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led.

A huge thank you to two of our wonderful neonatal mums, Brooke and Laura, for an incredibly thoughtful donation to our Neonatal Unit.

Brooke, whose little one Hudson was cared for by the team, and Laura, whose baby Teddy also spent time on the unit, have put together special welcome packs for families containing toiletries, books, baby blankets and lots more.

They also wanted to say thank you to our neonatal colleagues, creating gift packs containing hand cream, lip balm and keyrings, as well as bringing in plenty of sweets and chocolates for the team to enjoy.

It is such a kind gesture, and one that will mean a great deal to families arriving on the unit, often at what can be an anxious and unexpected time.

Thank you, Brooke and Laura, for thinking of both our families and our colleagues.

30 clinical areas accredited – six more than last year! 🌟

We’re celebrating another fantastic year for our CARE Framework, which recognises teams delivering high standards of safe, effective and patient-centred care across DBTH.

Seven clinical areas have now maintained accreditation for three consecutive years, while this year also saw emergency departments and outpatient services included for the first time – with seven outpatient departments achieving accreditation.

The review also introduced Accredited Plus, recognising teams demonstrating exceptional practice through innovation and quality improvement that is making a real difference for patients.

Karen Jessop, Chief Nurse, said: “I’m incredibly proud of what our teams have achieved. These results reflect the hard work, dedication and professionalism of colleagues right across the Trust and their commitment to providing the best possible care for our patients.”

A huge well done to all our accredited teams! 💙

A Good CQC rating is about more than what’s written in an inspection report – it reflects the care children, young people and their families experience every day.

Our Children’s Services at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital have been rated Good across all five areas assessed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors recognised compassionate and professional teams, timely care, strong safeguarding arrangements and the kindness, dignity and respect shown to children and their families.

We know many local families will have their own experiences of the colleagues behind this result.

If our Children’s Services teams have cared for your child or young person, we’d love to hear from you. Share your experience in the comments and help us recognise the colleagues and teams who were there for your family.

This is 17-month-old Jean Walmsley.

After an appeal in the local newspaper for bananas to help with her coeliac diet, local people responded with donations.

This photograph captures Sister Jean Holdsworth presenting Jean with one of those bananas.

It may seem like a small gesture today, but in post-war Britain, it was a remarkable act of kindness.

Our communities have always looked after one another!
