"I know why I do it… so why can’t I stop?”

This is something that can come up a lot in therapy.

You might know that you people-please.
You might recognise that you shut down during conflict, struggle to say no, overthink everything, or immediately assume you’ve done something wrong.

You may even understand where it comes from.

And yet, when something happens, there you are — doing it again.

That’s because understanding a pattern and changing a pattern are two different things.

Many of the ways we respond as adults were learned much earlier in life. At some point, staying quiet, keeping the peace, being “good”, achieving, avoiding conflict or putting other people first may have helped you feel safe, accepted or connected.

The problem is, we can carry those same strategies into adulthood long after we actually need them.

Therapy isn’t simply about asking “What’s wrong with me?”

Sometimes a much more useful question is:

“What happened that taught me I needed to respond this way?”

And from there, we can begin to understand whether that old way of protecting yourself still serves you now.

🌊Counselling spaces available in Bawtry🌊

Hi, I’m Vicky, a qualified and MBACP-registered counsellor and the therapist behind Safe Harbour Counselling & Psychotherapy – Yorkshire.

I currently have a couple of spaces available for new clients.

You might be considering counselling because you're struggling with anxiety, low mood or feeling overwhelmed. Or perhaps you've started to notice patterns that go a little deeper — people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, low self-worth, relationship difficulties, or experiences from childhood that continue to affect you now.

Sometimes you don't know exactly what is wrong. You just know that something doesn't feel right.

My approach is warm, collaborative and non-judgemental. Together, we can explore what's happening in your life now, understand the experiences that may have shaped you, and work towards meaningful, lasting change.

Therapy doesn’t have to happen in a room 🌿

If sitting face-to-face feels too much… this might feel different.

At Safe Harbour Counselling & Psychotherapy, you have the option to take your session outside - into a calm, private space where you can breathe, think, and talk without feeling boxed in.

No clinical feel.
No pressure to “get it right.”
Just space to be human.

For many people, this makes opening up feel that little bit easier.

And when therapy feels safer, the work goes deeper.

Sometimes therapy is spoken about through the lens of pain, patterns, and what feels hard.

But there is so much I quietly admire in the people who sit across from me, too.

The courage to show up. The honesty to face what hurts. The willingness to grow, even when growth feels uncomfortable.
The resilience to keep going. The hope they hold, even in the dark.

Therapy constantly reminds me that people are far more powerful than they realise.

Healing isn’t just about what you’ve been through. It’s also about the strength you carry while moving through it.

Which one do you recognise in yourself right now? 🤍

When the nervous system has been living in survival mode, calm can feel unfamiliar.

Moments like this matter.
Looking up. Slowing down. Letting your body notice that, right now, you are safe enough to breathe.

Regulation doesn’t always begin with big changes.

Sometimes it starts with one small pause, one deep breath, one moment of spaciousness.

Healing is often about helping the body learn what safety feels like again.
