Could regenerative therapies change how we approach joint preservation and musculoskeletal injury - and what does the evidence really tell us?

Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and fat-derived therapies are generating increasing interest in orthopaedics and sports medicine. But understanding their potential is only part of the picture. Where do these treatments fit into clinical practice, and how do we separate promising developments from the hype?

At BASEM Conference 2026, we're delighted to welcome Dr Markus Klingenberg, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Specialist from Germany, presenting:

BMAC and Fat-Derived Therapies

An internationally recognised specialist in regenerative orthopaedics, Markus focuses on integrating evidence-based orthobiologic treatments into sports medicine and joint preservation strategies.

His talk forms part of What Do You Need to Know About Orthobiologics?, chaired by Dr Sam Botchey - a session examining the evidence, patient selection and responsible clinical use of emerging MSK treatments.

Too young for a knee replacement, but struggling with osteoarthritis symptoms - what are the options?

For active patients in their 40s and early 50s, knee osteoarthritis can create a difficult treatment dilemma. When conservative management is no longer providing sufficient relief, but joint replacement may not yet be appropriate, how do clinicians navigate the middle ground?

At BASEM Conference 2026, Dr Craig Sheridan, Consultant in Musculoskeletal, Sport and Exercise Medicine, will explore this challenge in his talk:

Arthrosamid for Knee OA - Who and When to Treat: Defining the Responder Phenotype and Navigating the Middle Ground

Drawing on clinical evidence and real-world experience, Craig will examine patient selection, identifying those most likely to respond to polyacrylamide hydrogel (Arthrosamid), managing treatment expectations and recognising when surgical referral remains the right option.

His talk forms part of What Do You Need to Know About Orthobiologics?, chaired by Dr Sam Botchey - a session exploring the evidence behind emerging MSK treatments.

🏃 We know physical activity is essential for better health - so why is embedding it into everyday healthcare still such a challenge?

At BASEM Conference 2026, our panel session Policy in Practice – Embedding Physical Activity into Healthcare at Scale will explore how we move beyond ambition and turn physical activity policy into meaningful change.

Chaired by Dr Justin Varney-Bennett, Regional Director of Public Health for the South West of England, the discussion brings together three leading voices:

🔹 Dr Natasha Jones - Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine and co-founder of Moving Medicine, helping healthcare professionals make physical activity part of routine care.

🔹 Ms Annie Holden - A leader in physical activity, cardiovascular prevention and system-wide collaboration, working to connect healthcare with opportunities for people to become more active.

🔹 Dr Suzanne Tang - Consultant in Public Health at NHS England, championing the integration of prevention and physical activity into healthcare pathways.

💬 Together, they’ll reflect on a decade of progress, the challenges facing today's NHS and what needs to happen next to make physical activity a more integral part of healthcare.

Return to performance shouldn’t be a single clearance decision at the end of rehabilitation.

So what happens if we treat it instead as a series of decisions throughout the athlete’s journey back to sport?

As part of Return to Performance 2030: Clinical Reasoning, Biomechanics & Data-driven Decision-making in Elite Rehabilitation at BASEM Conference 2026, Dr Enda King will outline a practical, decision-led approach to rehabilitation.

Starting with the performance demands an athlete ultimately needs to tolerate, Enda will explore how clinical assessment, strength and power testing, biomechanics and on-field performance data can help identify priorities and guide the progression from assessment to intervention, exposure and reassessment.

The goal? Not simply getting an athlete to discharge - but preparing them to return to performance.

What can more than 25 years of research into female physiology teach us about protecting musculoskeletal health in active women?

At BASEM Conference 2026, we’re delighted to welcome Professor Julie Greeves OBE, Head of the Health and Performance Research team for the British Army.

Julie has spent over two decades investigating human performance, bone stress injuries and female physiology in military populations. Her research has helped shape Army training policy, inform practical guidance for servicewomen and advance our understanding of the factors influencing musculoskeletal injury risk.

👏 With over 150 peer-reviewed publications, Julie brings a wealth of experience in translating research into meaningful changes in practice.

She joins the session Women’s Musculoskeletal Health: New Evidence and Emerging Perspectives, chaired by Dr Natalie Shur, exploring important questions across women’s MSK health.

Orthobiologics: growing clinical tool or an area where the evidence still needs careful interpretation?

At BASEM Conference 2026, Dr Sam Botchey will cut through some of the uncertainty surrounding orthobiologics and look at what the evidence actually tells us in 2026.

With a particular focus on PRP, Sam will explore the biology, differences between preparations, current evidence and appropriate indications - before tackling the practical question: how do we translate that evidence into responsible UK clinical practice?

From patient selection and outcome tracking to governance and transparency, this is about moving beyond the hype and towards safe, ethical and credible use.

If orthobiologics are already part of your practice - or you're trying to decide where they should fit - explore the talk and book your place at BASEM Conference 2026.
