Weldmar Hospicecare

Weldmar Hospicecare Weldmar Hospicecare is a Dorset charity providing specialist end of life care. All of our care is free.

Weldmar Hospicecare is an independent Dorset charity that provides free end of life care for adults with a life limiting illness, and support for their loved ones. Our compassionate approach supports patients and their families in the community, at home, and in our hospice. We have a dedicated team of nurses, doctors, therapists, social workers and counsellors, but only 21% of our funds are provid

ed by the NHS – the rest is raised for our Dorset charity thanks to the support of the local community. Our aim is to ensure all patients needing end of life care in Dorset have access to excellent services, delivered when they are needed, meeting individual needs of patients and their loved ones.

We were encouraged by words from the Prime Minister at the weekend as he visited our counterparts at Wigan & Leigh Hospice, and gave an interview to a local newspaper about hospice funding.

Mr Burnham said that "the state has to play its part properly ... and I think it’s fair to say it isn’t at the moment.”

The Prime Minster recognised that hospices provide “whole person care, in a way that the NHS is just not set up to do”, for both patients and their loved ones.

He said that hospices value their independence: “I don’t even think the hospices are saying 'we want to be fully state-funded,' because that would change what they do. In my view, a mix of funding is not necessarily a bad thing."

Addressing the debate around assisted dying, Mr Burnham said that strengthening hospice care must come first: “I don’t think, personally, we can go and change the law in that very, very delicate and difficult space before we’ve properly secured the hospice movement across the UK. And that’s the order in which I put those things.”

Currently, for every £1 we spend on care for adults in Dorset who have a life limiting illness, more than 80p is funded by the support of the local community.
