I’m not great at talking to strangers are you?
I don’t consider myself to have social anxiety I’m just very careful about striking up conversations with people I don’t know.
Social anxiety isn’t really about being afraid to talk to people or a fear of being in social situations, although this can be a by product of social anxiety, social anxiety runs deeper than that, it is a real fear of being judged or criticised by others.
It is a real fear of embarrassing yourself in front of others.
People with social anxiety fear not being able to make small talk, stumbling over their words or going red in front of others.
Their fear of judgement leads to feelings that people will not be interested in what they have to say, or that people will be bored by them or laugh at them.
I don’t get any of this when I do speak with people, but I do have a deep rooted fear that I’m not going to like that person or I’ll not enjoy their company, then what!?
I’m pretty certain it stems from being bullied at school and having a father who used to say on holiday “ don’t talk to anyone, we might get stuck with them,”
People’s social anxiety may be as a result of some of their earlier life experiences.
What we learn as children can often be difficult to move away from as adults, we make our experiences and learnt behaviour a way of life.
What are the things you do now that could stem from your learnings as a child, are you aware this could be the reason for things you currently do or don’t do.
A lot of what we work with in counselling can be these rules we’ve been living by and haven’t even realised it.
We have even given these things labels, like social anxiety, when in fact they may be something entirely different.
If you have certain behaviours of thoughts that you would like to change than counselling can help you explore some of those rules of living you have been listening too and maybe help you make some changes that make life more comfortable for you.
However I’m still happy to have that empty seat next to me on the plane, some of those rules may still be comfortable for us.
