The story of Grace's birth

Shared with us by Elsa

With our first child, my birth experience was not the greatest. Once I arrived at the birthing unit, fear took over. I lost confidence and struggled to work with my body through labour.

After four years, I knew I wanted something different. I deeply desired a natural home birth experience. My journey was also deeply personal because my mother passed away while giving birth to me.

For so long, fear surrounded birth in my heart, and this time I wanted to break that cycle of fear and step into birth with trust, strength, and peace.

Throughout my pregnancy, I intentionally prepared myself mentally and emotionally for a home birth. I shared my plans with my midwife, leaned on supportive friends who had experienced natural births, listened to podcasts about physiological birth, and filled my mind with positive encouragement and education.

From around 34 weeks, I had Braxton Hicks contractions on and off, so by the end of pregnancy I was very used to the sensations. At 40 weeks and 3 days, I was at home relaxing after a family brunch/lunch when I started feeling lower back pain. I honestly didn’t think much of it. The back pain began picking up quickly, so I told my husband I needed a bath. I got in the bath, and he suggested I call the midwife, but I kept saying, “No, I’m fine.” The contractions would slow down a little, then build again. I got out, walked around, then went back into the bath. Soon after, I said I needed a shower.

My husband started timing the contractions. When he realised they were coming every 2 minutes, he said, “We need to call the midwife.”

I still insisted I was okay, but thankfully he called her anyway.Once she arrived, everything moved so quickly. She checked me and said, “Oh, you’re already 7cm!”

Before I even had time to process it, my body was ready to push.

Just 28 minutes later, in the comfort of our own home and surrounded by peace, our precious baby girl was born in our bathtub.

It was the most healing, empowering, and beautiful experience of my life. A full-circle moment of strength, faith, and redemption.

I am forever grateful to God, to my supportive husband, and to my incredible midwife for helping me bring our daughter safely into the world.

The lesson of the story is believe in yourself and what your body can do when you change your mindset and train it to positive thinking. Our body is capable to give birth naturally.

Jihan's home birth story

I landed in NZ in Feb 2023. Got pregnant a month later.

My due date was around Christmas, I tried to reach out to a few midwives who said they were on a break during that time. Being a nurse, I knew what birthing was, and the last thing I wanted was to be in a hospital setting for such a natural event.

In my culture where I come from, birth and death are better to be at home surrounded by loved ones, not with monitors and noise, just peace and love.

I reached out to Kim Mcmanus, who said she was only taking women who wanted home birth during Christmas period. It was exactly what I needed, a midwife that's already aligned with my needs even before we met.

I went to the clinic. She was an absolute delight to deal with, she was always around to monitor my baby's growth and our well-being.

The waiting game was exhausting, I couldn't wait to meet my little man. At 40w6, on the 28th of December 2023, at 6AM, my waters broke. My midwife already told me that she was sick and unfortunately might miss the birth and to just contact the backup midwives that I had met before. I sent a text to Kate, just to let her know that my waters broke, but everything was fine. I had no contractions at the time and being a first time mum I expected things to take a long long time. I went to bed to get some rest, but just a little time later my contractions started, out of nowhere to picking up without a break.
I woke my husband up to set the pool for me. I was still helping him just to keep my mind and body busy. We set up a bed, then I got into the pool, using my birthing comb I was breathing through my contractions and trying to find a comfortable position, I could feel my baby spinning and trying to fit through my pelvic bones. I had to change positions so many times, the urge to push was starting to build up. I called the midwife and asked her to come over.

While monitoring the baby, his heartbeat was a bit high. I had the water quite warm, once we cooled it down I didn't like it and ended up labouring in the dilation station. My body was pushing him down.

I got a bit tired and tried to go to my bed and lie down but the position didn't work, it didn't give him enough space to descend. I felt uncomfortable instantly and asked my husband to help me sit up. I stayed on the edge of the bed, with him and the midwife putting wet hot towels on my back and on my perineum, which felt so good.

Then I wanted to go back to the dilation station, probably because I felt the urge the pass my bowels, but no it was just because we were nearing the end. I felt his head pushing against my perineum and him almost out, we went back running to the bed, where I just went on all fours and pushed out a healthy beautiful little 4220g pink worm. The instant was just magic, lying down in bed and holding him for the first time after a long 40w6 wait.

This time around, I am expecting twins, and want a homebirth again if all starts to align. Because nothing beats being in that little bubble.

Calling people going on holiday over the Christmas season... 🏘🌍

We have a mama who has contacted us and is looking for a place to rent for about 3-4 weeks mid December to January in New Brighton or Christchurch.
She has found a beautiful experienced midwife to have a homebirth with but lives a bit far away. She is needing somewhere to call home for 1 month near Christchurch and will plan to have her home birth in that space.

Comment if you are going away and your home would be available for renting, or if you know of somewhere that might be available. 🏰

Yesterday I posted asking the community for stories of people who've given birth with a sling or supportive rope or suspension. I had the lovely Christchurch Doula Ina-Mae reach out with permission from this amazing whanau to share their photos and a video of their birth using aerial silks and a hoop.
(Video in comments)

How EPIC is this. The mama is so beautiful and powerful! And so cool to see aerial silks and hoop used in this way!

I am interested in stories or experiences from people who have used a birth sling (the kind of thing pictured) or some kind or rope/suspension in labour. Was it helpful? Thoughts?
Especially interested in those who may have rigged up some kind of sling or suspension above a birth pool, although that might be a niche request indeed 🤣

Pic screenshotted from &honey website who hire out birth slings!
