Mannin Doctors - Private GPs

Mannin Doctors - Private GPs The Island's first Private GP centre. Give yourself the time you need. No need to leave your NHS GP.
(1)

We are two of the Island's GPs who feel that currently the NHS services do not give patients enough time to have a meaningful discussion. We know this is not the fault of the local GPs, but we decided to offer an alternative way of consulting a doctor. This means You can decide how much time you want to spend with us and what topics you would like to discuss. We don't have any government targets to

meet so we can fully focus on what matters to you. We are currently going to work at Manx Medical Imaging at Village Walk, Onchan, before moving to out own premises.

From my desk at Mannin Doctors Private GPs this week

A patient came to see me recently after being prescribed a weight loss injection elsewhere.

Something didn’t feel right to her, so we talked.
Not just about weight, about her life, her health, her background.

Within that conversation, two serious issues came to light.
One required urgent investigation and surgery.
The other was something happening in her personal life that needed addressing.

Either one of those should have stopped that prescription being given.

Within six weeks, she’d had treatment, and everything had changed.

Here’s the point...medication should never be prescribed in isolation.
It should be prescribed with a full understanding of:
• your health history
• your current symptoms
• your life circumstances
• other medications and substances

If that hasn’t happened, pause, ask questions and go back...or get a second opinion.

At Mannin Doctors we take time to understand the full picture before making decisions.

Because the wrong treatment, at the wrong time, for the wrong reason, can do more harm than good.

More than a patient, part of the practice.

From my desk at Mannin Doctors this week…

ADHD is being talked about more openly than ever before.

For some people, that increased awareness brings an understandable question:
"Is ADHD being overdiagnosed?"

It’s an important question and one that deserves a careful answer.

ADHD isn’t diagnosed through a single symptom, questionnaire or social media post. Concentration difficulties, overwhelm, forgetfulness and emotional changes can have many possible causes.

A diagnosis should come from a detailed specialist assessment that considers the person’s experiences throughout their life, the impact on their daily functioning and whether something else could be contributing.

What we do know is that many adults have reached midlife without ever understanding why certain parts of life have always felt harder for them.

I often see families where a child’s diagnosis prompts a parent to recognise similar lifelong patterns in themselves. Sometimes that recognition extends across several generations.

ADHD can run in families and it can occur alongside other neurodevelopmental differences, including dyslexia and autism. But no two people will experience it in exactly the same way.

For many, exploring ADHD isn’t about looking for a label.

It’s about understanding why:
• maintaining focus can feel exhausting
• organisation becomes overwhelming
• time is difficult to manage
• emotions can feel harder to regulate
• everyday demands take more energy than other people realise

That understanding can bring relief.

It may lead to practical support, treatment or different ways of managing work, relationships and daily life. Sometimes, it simply helps someone make sense of experiences they’ve carried for many years.

Wondering whether you may have ADHD doesn’t mean you have it. But you also don’t have to dismiss the question or work through it alone.

At Mannin Doctors, we can listen to what you’ve been experiencing, consider your wider health and guide you towards the most appropriate next step, including specialist referral where needed.

Because understanding how your mind works can change how you support yourself.

Men’s Health Week is a reminder. Looking after yourself needs to last longer than seven days.

Too many men wait until something feels serious before booking an appointment.
They put tiredness down to work.
Poor sleep down to stress.
Weight gain down to getting older.
Low mood, reduced strength, brain fog or a change in libido down to “just one of those things”.

But you don’t need to work out what’s wrong before you speak to a doctor. That’s our job.

Dr Nathan Golban runs dedicated men’s health clinics at Mannin Doctors throughout the year, supporting men with concerns including:
• Ongoing tiredness or reduced energy
• Changes in mood, concentration or sleep
• Low testosterone and andropause symptoms
• Reduced libido or sexual function
• Loss of strength or muscle mass
• Weight gain, particularly around the middle
• General health concerns you’ve been putting off

Your appointment gives you time to talk openly, review the full picture and decide what checks or next steps are right for you.

No embarrassment. No overthinking. No need to wait until things get worse.
Put yourself on the list.
