Memories of childhood was growing up on a council estate in south London. The closest thing to owning a fluffy animal was when the goldfish got a fungus disease.
I was ‘that child’ who would run up to animals first, with my parents apologising for any dog left traumatised in my wake. On escaping London my dreams of having animals became reality, becoming the proud owner of two Arabian mares, ‘Jasimine’ and ‘Flossie’.
To ensure that I could gave them the best care I enrolled with the BHS and took their exams passing level 1 and 2. During this time I can honestly say Flossie was a handful. Loving to demonstrate how short I actually was, she preferred to walk around on two legs rather than the four legs she was given. Becoming more dangerous and my lack of control her future was hanging in the balance. In a desperate bid to make it right, I enrolled us both up for natural horsemanship courses. Being very smart she taught me the need for patience, a swear jar and mental stamina. The end result being blessed with an amazing bond and being able to ride at liberty, something I never thought was possible.
Obviously with horse-riding comes risks which resulted in some unforgiving accidents in a short space of time which, involved lots of metal work. Knowing my orthopaedic consultants on a first name basis, became common place. Over the years I started looking at complementary therapies to ease the chronic pain and to help my ageing horse’s lives more comfortable.
I came across the EMMETT Technique at Your Horse Live many years ago. At the time, the stand was busy so I walked on past making a mental note to return. In fact it was a year later that I walked past the same stand and took their leaflet. Months later I came across the EMMETT Technique leaflet, the same week, EMMETT was mentioned during a night out with friends. Out of curiosity and fate I enrolled on the equine course, not knowing what to expect. From that moment on, I sat open mouthed speechless. Watching horses change shape and behaviour from what looked like a few tiny moves.
If you have ever heard the quote ‘when the student is ready the teacher will appear’ the teacher was in the form of Mr Tony Sherry. The senior instructor for the EMMETT 4 Animals Technique. His enthusiasm and infectious laughter made the course such fun to learn that I completed the Equine practitioner course in 2017, followed later by HEP1. My desire and love for the EMMETT Technique encouraged me to sign up to the human practitioner course or as I call it, ‘Muggle Studies’. Aches and pains which I had endured over the years, simply vanished. On completing my O.W.L’s (Module 1-6) I progressed onto N.E.W.T.s, (EP Levels) currently residing at EP5. These advanced levels for me, captures the pure magic of EMMETT. My love of dogs naturally made me sign up for the dog practitioner courses held at Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare. Being able to help the dogs that had been through so much physical and mental abuse was truly an emotional and inspirational experience.
My love of travelling to remote places around the world has given me the added bonus of not just being able to treat animals but also people in real need of help in isolated areas. Their shock and amazement just using the EMMETT Technique is priceless and so rewarding.
You will usually find me pouncing on people at local events raising money for charities using the EMMETT Technique. Some of these have included the Big Cat Sanctuary, Guide Dogs for the Blind and even completing a full circle helping out on the Emmett stands at Your Horse Live.
In late 2019 I was privileged to be asked by Tony to become a tutor for the equine EMM-Tech. Under the training wing of John Rea I’ve already started this new and exciting adventure. Although COVID-19 has put a hold to any practical training, I can’t wait to represent the magic of the EMMETT Technique in the near future.
