🏅 Why Include Local Races in Your Training Plan? 🏃
One of the biggest reasons I love entering local races is simple: they make me work harder than I would on a normal training run.
No matter how disciplined you are, there’s something about standing on a start line, being surrounded by other runners, and having a finish line to chase that helps you find an extra gear.
Local races are a fantastic way to:
✅ Test your fitness
✅ Practice race-day pacing
✅ Build confidence
✅ Stay motivated during training blocks
✅ Push beyond what you’d usually do alone
Today’s Thornbury 10K was a perfect example. The atmosphere, support, and friendly competition helped me dig a little bit deeper and get more out of the run than I would have on a standard training session. I even clocked a 1:18 last 400m on that lovely downhill finish 👀
If you’ve got a goal race coming up, don’t underestimate the value of including a few local events along the way.
