I’m sitting here trying to find the words to articulate exactly what me and my husband Lee, endured together at the weekend. Perhaps the word ‘endured’ is the wrong word to use, although at times it would seem that was exactly the right word!
Completing the We Run Wild’s flagship 108 mile point to point ultra marathon was in the forefront of our mind since last year. We were hungry for it. Nothing was going to stop us this time, and we put the hard work in for MONTHS.
Nobody sees the early mornings, the miles upon miles of training runs, the weight training, the emotions we went through….people just see the end result so believe me when I say that just getting to the start line was the hardest bit. But hey, if you want something badly enough you’ll put the work in.
The race takes you from Ballintoy in the North Antrim Coast, all the way over the Sperrin mountains to Gortin in Omagh and it tests EVERY ounce of mental and physical strength you possess. It’s a beast fully intent on stopping you in your tracks but we weren’t going to quit so we fought it EVERY step of the way.
Just under 35 hours and 108 miles later we finally joined that elusive 100 mile club, totally and utterly exhausted from head to toe but elated to have finally completed what we set out to do.
As a wise man once told me, “Challenge your fears and conquer your limitations”. This was the phrase I repeated when the going got tough during those last 19 miles, and it’s a phrase I’ll continue to use for a long time to come⭐️.
