Calling all Football teams and players in the Off Season

For players, getting a head start on your competition and preparing for the upcoming season goes a long way.

Injuries are difficult to predict but there are know risk factors for injury that can be screened for - and reduced to ensure you stay as available as possible to play as much as possible.

At Dudley Physiotherapy Clinic we utilise movement screening - used by Bayern Munich and Manchester City, (to name a few) alongside strength tests to identify those correctable risk factors.

Once quantified we can reduce these through exercise and corrective strategies to optimise physically what you can do on the pitch.

Reducing the risk of injury is crucial for maintaining long-term health and performance, whether you're an athlete or simply active. To effectively minimise this risk, it's important to adopt strategies that are multifactorial, individualised, and integrated into regular training routines.

A multifactorial approach considers various aspects such as fitness levels, biomechanics, and psychological factors. This means not relying on a single test or method but rather combining multiple assessments and interventions.

Individualisation is key. Each person has unique risks influenced by their personal history, the specific sport they are involved in, and their current workload. Tailoring strategies to these individual characteristics can significantly enhance their effectiveness.

Finally, injury prevention should be woven into the fabric of regular training. It's not just something to focus on during the pre-season or when recovering from an injury.

Consistent integration ensures that protective measures become a natural part of training, helping to build resilience and reduce the likelihood of injuries over time.

Injuries & Illness in Pro British Tennis Players 🎾

1-year injury surveillance study
International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy (2025)

https://ijspt.scholasticahq.com/article/147519-musculoskeletal-injuries-and-illness-in-professional-british-tennis-players-an-injury-surveillance-study

Why This Study?
πŸ₯ Tennis at the elite level demands high physical load and training volume.
πŸ“Š Yet, full-season injury data in professional tennis is limited.
πŸ“ This study tracked injuries & illnesses over a full competition year

Who Was Studied?
🎾 33 pro British tennis players
β€’ 16 male
β€’ 17 female
Age range: ~14–37 yrs
Tracked Jan–Dec 2023

Overall Injury & Illness Rates
πŸ“ 109 health problems reported
πŸ“ˆ Overall incidence (injury + illness):
β€’ 3.3 per 365 days overall
β€’ 2.1 males
β€’ 4.4 females

Most Frequently Affected Parts
Top regions with highest incidence:
🎾 Medical illness (highest overall rate)
🎾 Wrist – high prevalence
🎾 Shoulder – especially in females

Highest Prevalence by Region
πŸ“Š Overall prevalence (% of players):
β€’ Wrist – 4.2%
β€’ Shoulder – 2.6%
β€’ Ankle – 2.3%

Females had higher overall injury prevalence (18.7%) vs males (16.2%).

Severity (Days Lost)
πŸ•’ Severity measures total days lost or modified due to injury/illness.
πŸ₯ Wrist injuries resulted in most total days (507 days).
🦡 Ankle injuries had highest days per injury (~46 days).

Male vs Female Differences
πŸ“ˆ Males had greater severity per injury overall than females.
β€’ Male ankle injuries were especially severe.
β€’ Females had more injuries in shoulder and lower limb regions.

Illness Matters Too
πŸ€’ Medical illness had the highest individual incidence among all categories β€” reminding us health isn’t just about musculoskeletal injury.

Why It Matters
πŸ… This year-long surveillance gives baseline data for injury prevention programs.
πŸ“ Coaches, physios & performance staff can use this to design targeted strategies to reduce time lost and improve athlete health.

πŸ”₯ Exercising in the Heat? Stay Safe and Smart πŸ”₯

As the temperatures rise, it’s still important to stay active β€” but your body needs extra care when training in hot weather.

Here’s what we recommend at Dudley Physio Clinic:

βœ… Hydrate before, during, and after activity
βœ… Exercise early morning or late evening to avoid peak heat
βœ… Wear lightweight, breathable clothing
βœ… Listen to your body β€” dizziness, cramps, or excessive fatigue are red flags
βœ… Adjust your routine if you’re recovering from injury β€” heat can increase fatigue and inflammation

πŸ’¬ DM us or book an appointment to tailor your physio or rehab plan for hot-weather training!

Prehabilitation is better than Rehabilitation

Preventing an injury is always better than having to recover from one but how do we do this?
In essence we can't prevent all injuries but there are risk factors we can look at to reduce the risk.
The greatest risk factors for injury are

βœ… Previous injury
βœ… Weight (BMI greater the 40)
βœ… Age

All of which we can do little or nothing about.

The other risk factors are however modifiable and are able to be changed.

These are:
βœ… Altered Motor Control
βœ… Asymmetry

Depending upon the area we can assess these and set baselines for change, reducing your injury risk and making you more resilient to injuries happening.
