Watch a stressed client at the start of a session. They fidget, they adjust, they fill the silence with talking. Then — around twenty minutes in — they just stop.
That constant movement at the start isn't rudeness or nerves. It's hypervigilance — the nervous system continuously scanning for threat, keeping the body in a state of readiness. Under chronic stress it runs in the background all the time, consuming energy, maintaining tension.
When parasympathetic state deepens, hypervigilance quiets. The micro-movements stop. The body becomes genuinely, completely still. Not asleep. Not disengaged. Safe. For possibly the first time that day — or that week.
I watch for the stillness in every session. It tells me more than anything the client could say. When it arrives, I know we're there. The nervous system has assessed this environment, this touch, this presence — and decided it's safe enough to stand down.
That stillness costs them nothing. It cost you everything you know about the nervous system.
