The NHS Dumfries and Galloway Drug and Alcohol Service is a community and hospital based service provided by Medical, Mental and General Health Nurses, Specialist Pharmacists, Specialist Occupational Therapist and Assertive Outreach and hospital based Drug and Alcohol Liaison staff. The Service also has staff trained in psychological therapies. Should you need further information or wish to make

a referral for yourself, or another person with their consent, please feel free to get in touch by contacting us on 01387 244555.

Do you have a loved one or friend struggling with drug/alcohol addiction? You are not alone.

What to expect:
• A confidential support group
• Chat one to one or as a group (we want you to feel comfortable and safe)
• Hear stories from family members/friends who have supported loved ones in Addiction
• Meet different agency services who can let you know how they may be able to support you
• Craft - with a relaxing activity

One week to go until International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) 2026.

This year's theme, "25 Years On. Still Needed.", is both a reflection and a call to action.

For 25 years, IOAD has brought communities together to remember those lost to overdose, support those impacted, and raise awareness that overdose can happen to anyone. While progress has been made, overdose continues to affect individuals, families, and communities across the world.

The theme also carries a message of hope. Overdose is preventable, and we know that education, compassionate support, access to care, and evidence-based interventions save lives. By continuing to learn, speak openly, and challenge stigma, we can help create safer, healthier communities.

Together, we remember. We act. We continue.

Why is BBV testing important? 🤔

Blood borne viruses such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV often have no symptoms for many years. Getting tested means that, if needed, you can access treatment early, protect your health and help prevent passing an infection on to others.

Vaccination against Hepatitis B offers effective protection for those who may be at increased risk.

Modern day treatment for Hepatitis C offers a cure rate of approximately 95% with today's antiviral medications when people complete treatment as prescribed.

👥️ Who should consider getting tested?

Testing is recommended for anyone who:
✔ Has ever injected or snorted drugs, even once or many years ago (this includes use of co***ne).
✔ Has shared injecting equipment.
✔ Has received tattoos or piercings in unregulated settings.
✔ Has had unprotected s*x where there may have been a risk of HIV or Hepatitis B.
✔ Thinks they may have been exposed to a blood borne virus for any reason.
✔ Simply wants peace of mind.

🩸 **Blood Borne Viruses (BBVs): Know the Risks**

Blood borne viruses (BBVs) include Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. They can be passed from person to person through infected blood and You may be at risk if you:
• Share needles, syringes or other injecting equipment.
• Share straws or rolled banknotes to snort co***ne or other drugs - Tiny amounts of blood from damaged nasal tissue can spread viruses, particularly Hepatitis C.
• Have unprotected s*x.
• Have tattoos or piercings carried out with unsterile equipment.

🥰 Protect yourself:
✅ Never share injecting or snorting equipment.
✅ Get vaccinated against Hepatitis B.
✅ Get tested if you've ever been at risk.

BBV testing is free, quick and confidential. Effective treatments are available, and Hepatitis C is curable.
