A new course has just gone live on the Learning Hub - Effective Room Leadership in Early Years

This one is aimed more at room leaders, senior practitioners, deputies and managers.

It covers the sort of things that come up every day when you’re leading a room — managing the team, setting expectations, delegation, communication, feedback, staff development and the more difficult conversations too.

We’ve also added 8 downloadable leadership tools that can actually be used back in the setting, rather than just sitting in the course.

I loved joining Susan McGhee on Services Scotland’s podcast to chat about safety training in nurseries and the importance of paediatric first aid.

This one felt particularly special because my own children attended Flexible Childcare. I’ve known them as a parent, and they’ve been using our services at First Stop Safety Training since 2020.

Keeping children safe is something we all care deeply about. Giving childcare teams the knowledge and confidence to act in an emergency is such an important part of that.

Many of our staff attended paediatric first aid training during the October holidays with First Stop Safety Training! They had lots of fun whilst learning important skills to keep the kids safe. Congrats to Shelley, Kerryann, Ruiardh and Skye for answering the most correct questions throughout the training⭐️🏆⛑️

I'm delivering a talk tomorrow, covering how ourcompany started, to where we are today and it really got me thinking.

This photo was taken not long after Sean and I started First Stop Safety Training back in 2019.

We had just moved home to Scotland after living in Australia. It was just the two of us, no kids, no big team and no idea quite how far this little business would go. We were simply trying to make our way into the paediatric first aid world and build something of our own.

Fast forward almost eight years later and life looks very different.

We now deliver training across Scotland, work with multiple councils and organisations, and have grown from specialising in paediatric first aid into delivering a much wider range of first aid, safeguarding, moving and handling, anti-ligature and safety training.

We’ve also launched the First Stop Learning Hub, our own online CPD platform, which has become a whole new part of the business that I’m incredibly excited about.

And somewhere in amongst building all of that, we’ve had two amazing children, now four and five, added a dog to the chaos, and somehow kept everything moving!

I’m usually so focused on what’s next that I don’t really stop and look back at what we’ve already achieved. And actually, I’m really proud of us.

We started with an idea and a lot of determination. We’ve built something far bigger than we ever imagined at the beginning and I know we have the capability to push it so much further.

This CPD Group Accredited course carries 2 CPD points and is designed for staff and managers working across health, care, social work, Early Years and other regulated services in Scotland.

The course covers when Duty of Candour applies, staff and organisational responsibilities, communication and apology, reviewing incidents, learning from what happened, record keeping and annual reporting.

It includes practical scenarios, interactive activities and a downloadable toolkit to support learners beyond the course itself.

The course looks at what may sit underneath behaviour, how adults can support regulation, and how calm boundaries, routines, transitions and the environment can all make a difference.

It also includes a practical downloadable toolkit that staff can keep and use back in their setting.
