NEW COURSE NOW LIVE – Schemas in Early Years

Why does a child keep lining things up? Carrying objects from one place to another? Wrapping, spinning, connecting or repeating the same type of play again and again?

They may be exploring a schema.

Our brand-new Schemas in Early Years course is now live and has been approved by The CPD Group for 2 CPD points.

This practical, interactive course helps Early Years practitioners understand the eight commonly recognised schemas and, more importantly, how this knowledge can strengthen observation, planning and everyday practice.

You'll explore how to:

🔹 Recognise possible patterns in children's play
🔹 Observe without jumping to conclusions or labelling children
🔹 Support schema interests with appropriate resources and environments
🔹 Extend learning while still following the child's lead
🔹 Communicate observations confidently with parents and carers
🔹 Turn observations into meaningful, responsive planning

The course includes videos, interactive activities, realistic scenarios, reflection tasks and downloadable resources to use within your setting.

Already a First Stop Learning Hub member?
It's been added to the Hub and is available to your team at no additional cost.

Not a Hub member?
You can also purchase Schemas in Early Years individually, no subscription required.

On 27 August 2026, Public Health Scotland published new dedicated health-protection guidance for Early Years childcare settings.

One frustration we hear regularly from nurseries is how difficult it can be to keep up with changing guidance, especially when online training courses contain outdated information, broken links or resources that are no longer current.

We don’t want the First Stop Learning Hub to be like that.

When national guidance changes, we review the courses it affects and update the content, links and resources. We are now reviewing our Infection Control course against the new Scottish guidance, including information on:

• Exclusion periods
• Managing outbreaks
• Cleaning and disinfection
• Nappy changing and toileting
• Laundry and waste
• Blood and bodily-fluid exposure

Once the review is complete, Learning Hub members will automatically receive the updated course as part of their existing subscription. There is no additional course to purchase.

Our aim is simple: Early Years staff should be able to log in knowing that their training reflects current Scottish guidance—not information that was correct several years ago.

That is the value of an actively maintained CPD Hub.

I’ve always been passionate about teaching and getting the best out of the people I train. I love making training fun, interactive and engaging rather than simply talking at people and hoping the information sticks.

When we started developing the First Stop Learning Hub, I really wanted to take that same approach and bring it into online learning.

Because, if I’m being truthful, some online training can be pretty boring.

I didn’t want our courses to be something you just click through to get a certificate.

Each course is designed to actually teach, with interactive activities throughout that give learners the chance to think, reflect and put what they’ve learned into practice.

So seeing feedback like this coming through genuinely makes me so happy.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to leave feedback. It really does help us keep improving and creating training that people actually enjoy completing.
