Carers Week 2026 starts today.
You won’t hear us calling carers “heroes” or an “invisible army”.
Because caring isn’t about heroism. It’s about love, responsibility, and too often, stepping in where systems don’t.
At PAMIS, we work alongside families of people with profound learning and multiple disabilities every day. We know that what carers need isn’t praise - it’s the right support, at the right time, to make caring sustainable.
That means:
• Flexible employment that works in real life
Many parent carers are part of the PAMIS team. Flexible working isn’t a perk - it’s essential. It allows people to stay in work while continuing to care.
• Access to Changing Places Toilets
For over 20 years, we’ve campaigned for accessible facilities. Without them, people with complex disabilities and their families are excluded from everyday life. That’s why we will continue to lead the UK Changing Places Toilets Consortium.
• Support with postural care
Good postural care is critical for health, comfort, and quality of life. Families need the knowledge, training and ongoing support to get this right.
• Opportunities for connection and peer support
Through our friendship clubs and leisure activities, families can connect with others who understand, building relationships that support well-being and reduce isolation.
• Family support when it’s needed most
Not at a convenient time. Not after a long wait. When families need it.
Carers don’t need to be told how resilient they are.
They need systems that work.
They need practical support.
They need to be listened to.
This Carers Week, we’re standing with families - not to celebrate endurance, but to keep pushing for the changes that make it less necessary.
