It's Infant Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 and the theme is attunement.
From the very start, babies depend on the adults caring for them to tune in to their feelings and signals. Even before birth, they’re already beginning to connect with the world, and the way we notice and respond to them helps their minds grow and develop.
Lots of things can make this difficult. Stress, tiredness, past experiences, or big changes in life can all get in the way of feeling connected. That’s completely normal, and it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.
👉 Did you know about Fife’s infant mental health team?
It offers specialist support for infants and their parents/carers in Fife before birth and up to their third birthday.
Thinking about your baby’s emotional wellbeing means paying attention to how you and your baby are getting to know each other. Often, support from partners, family, and friends is enough to help you stay attuned. But sometimes parents and carers need a bit more help.
The team is a small team of specialist health visitors and child psychotherapists.
If you have concerns about your infant’s emotional wellbeing, their relationship with you or how you feel about your baby, you can speak to your community midwife, health visitor or family nurse who can refer you to the infant mental health team.
The team can also become involved before your baby is born.
