The Animal Chiropractor

The Animal Chiropractor Chiropractic is a profession concerned with the neuro-musculoskeletal system. Simply put we look at We also treat people of all ages.

Chiropractic is a professional title protected by law in the UK and Channel Islands. This means that as a profession, high standards can be guaranteed and maintained. All animal chiropractors have completed 4-5 years undergraduate human chiropractic training, are registered with the general chiropractic council and have then undertaken postgraduate animal chiropractic training. Both of our chiropr

actors completed training with the International Academy of Veterinary Chiropractic (Germany) and Options for Animals (Kansas, USA). In addition both chiropractors successfully completed the independent certification (consisting of a practical and written examination) of the IVCA (International Veterinary Chiropractic Association) and are registered with all major pet insurance providers. The combined experience of both chiropractors is now over 40 years. Horses recover more rapidly and have less re-exacerbations of conditions when their riders are treated as well. Agility handlers often feel as though their speed and agility (as well as that of their dog) improves with Chiropractic. Chiropractic generally involved manual, short lever manipulation but also can include soft tissue work, ultrasound, cold laser, kinesiotaping and acupuncture. We have experience of working with professional sports teams and individuals (rugby union and premiership football) as well as dressage, show jumping, agility etc.

Fascia always plays a role in the treatment we give at NGCO. I use a fascial instrument to "scan" a dog initially in order to decide what is happening on a fascial level.

Whether we are dealing with a canine athlete or a senior struggling with osteoarthritis we always consider fascial components.

Fascia helps explain so much in us all. Ask us about fascia next time you're in the clinic or we can chat about it at The North East Dog Festival :)

Good Luck to all of our clients competing at KCI this week. The best thing about it all is the partnerships you have created. You all take a winner (or two) home with you.

RAMP Register

I recently had a conversation with a client about her dog who also sees a physiotherapist. She proudly told me that the physiotherapist was registered with RAMP-Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners which meant she met the gold standard.

I said that's excellent - I am also registered with RAMP 😂

It dawned on me that whilst I am busy in practice, I haven't been doing a good enough job of educating owners.

So rest assured, I am also on the RAMP register. ✅

The animal chiropractic course I teach: Options for Animals - UK is also an Academic Education provider with RAMP.

Myth: Chiropractors don't know about rehabilitation

Fact: Over the past twenty years the way in which cases are managed and the courses we have undertaken have evolved quite considerably. Through covid and before, time was spent learning more about rehabilitation and it's integration with treatment. It's common once the initial injury or ailment has been resolved that rehabilitation exercises of some degree will be implemented.

Myth: Chiropractors don't use laser.

Fact: We have used various forms of laser and light therapy at the clinic for the past 10 years.

Currently, we most frequently use light therapy in the form of both lasers or LEDs to improve tissue repair, reduce pain and inflammation wherever the beam is applied. Laser can be carried out during a standard treatment appointment.

It has been used for many years on sports injuries, arthritic joints, neuropathic pain syndromes, back and neck pain. Over 700 randomised clinical trials have been published on laser and LEDs, half of which are on pain.

Myth: Chiropractic for animals is just about manipulating joints.

Fact: Chiropractic is a profession concerned with optimising function of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. In order to do this every patient is treated as an individual with a tailored management plan.

"Adjustments" are specific manipulations that are often associated with the profession. Although many presume these are administered solely to restore motion, the truth is a little more involved. Adjustments are designed to stimulate the nervous system through gentle, rapid manipulations that take a joint through it's full range of motion.

Additionally, we use other techniques and tools to optimise results. This includes:
💡Soft tissue work
💡Triggerpoint therapy
💡Cold laser
💡Theraplate
💡Ultrasound
💡K taping
💡Rehabilitation exercises
💡Explaining the plan of management
💡Supplying laminated exercise guides when needed
