It's been a very busy week for our 999 team on the road and in our control rooms due to the heat wave, including receiving the highest level of 999 calls since 26 August last year.

As always, we prioritise the most seriously ill or injured patients first. This means it may take us longer than our target of 2-3 hours to get to patients calling with less serious emergencies.

We have also seen a rise in people calling us back on 999 to check on how quickly we'll arrive - please don't do this. Only call us back on 999 if there are any changes in the patient's condition or you no longer need an ambulance (for example, you can make your own way to a hospital or treatment centre).

With the recent heatwave, ambulance services across the country have received emergency calls for people in difficulties at the coast, and inland in rivers, lakes and lagoons.

Tragically, on Bank Holiday Monday, three teenagers drowned in separate incidents in West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Warwickshire.

With temperatures set to remain high for the rest of half-term week, please help us share this vital information from the Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK.

Even on the hottest days, cold water shock can make you gasp and panic in the water.

✅Enter water slowly and carefully if you plan to go in
✅Stay within reach of friends/relatives and at a standing depth
✅Always supervise younger children and talk to your older children about staying safe in or near open water
✅If you find yourself in the water unexpectedly, float to live. Once you're comfortable floating, shout for help and try to remain calm

Remember: if you spot someone in difficulty in water, if you're at the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard; if you're inland, call 999 and ask for the fire service.

Benedict's Law is a UK legislative initiative (also known as the School Allergy Safety Bill) that mandates improved, consistent allergy management in English schools, set to be implemented by September 2026. Following the 2021 death of 5-year-old Benedict Blythe, it requires schools to hold, train staff on, and use adrenaline auto-injectors, alongside comprehensive allergy policies.

Benedict Blythe Foundation
Key Requirements of Benedict's Law (from September 2026):
Mandatory Training: All staff members, including teachers, assistants, and lunch supervisors, must receive training on spotting anaphylaxis symptoms and using adrenaline auto-injectors.
Stocked Auto-Injectors: Schools must have a supply of "spare" adrenaline pens to treat allergic reactions.

Individual Allergy Plans: Every student with a known allergy must have a documented Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP).

Comprehensive Policies: Schools are required to have a clear "whole-school" food allergy policy.
Annual Refresher Training: Staff should have annual refresher training on allergy management.

The law aims to move beyond voluntary guidance and make these safety measures mandatory across all schools, ensuring a consistent standard of care regardless of location. The campaign was spearheaded by the Benedict Blythe Foundation, founded by Benedict's parents.
