TUESDAY TRIVIA
Let's move from one strong back bend to another, The Bow pose (Dhanurasana), a natural progression from Locust.

As always we'll start with a look at the name.

The Sanskrit word Dhan means Bow and of course we know asana. I think it's a fairly obvious one why it's called Bow, as it mimics the shape of an archer's strung bow when we lift into the full posture.

What do you think of this posture? I find it a challenge but I like it, and I don't know why but I prefer it to Locust.

Our next Rise and Shine session is all about working with the fullness of high summer, that sense of completion and the stillness this brings before we start the "work" of letting go.

Join me, online, next Saturday (August 15th) 7 - 8am, for an hour of yoga to ease you into the day, with pranayama and relaxation. I'll be sharing with you some of my current morning routine, and of course I always like to throw in some surprises in special classes 🙂

The class is usual class price £5.50, I'll put the Zoom link in our Facebook VIP group, or you can message me for the link if you're not in the group.

It will be a beautiful, calm way to start your day

FABULOUS FRIDAY'S TIP OF THE DAY: How to get the most from your asana practice. Pigeon pose

Once you are in a comfy position with your legs and hips, think about drawing the flesh away from your trousers, lightly engaging the core muscles.

This posture can cause some uncomfortable nipping in the low back, try these tweaks to take the pressure off...

* Your bottom needs to be contracted, but not too much.
* Lengthen your tailbone, sending it towards the floor, not tucking it under and definitely not towards the back wall.
* Lift your ribs away from your hips to create space at the back of the waist.

Mona and I are starting to get really excited for our upcoming CPD session 🙂 We're diving once again into the beautiful classic seqence Surya Namaskar (6 CPD points). Saturday October 3rd, 10am - 4.30pm at Om Yoga Works in Farsley, Leeds. Price £108.

Mona and I like our Dru Yoga to be practical, and this session is no exception. We'll be sharing practices, wisdom and ways of working with sun sequence that you can use to deepen your own practice and to give your students the best experience.

During the session we'll be...

* Moving through the koshas and how they manifest in Surya Namaskar.
* Delving deeper into the pranayama associated with the sequence, with a nod back to our sessions on the prana vayus.
* Exploring the chakra connections.
* And once again practising with the sublime Surya mantra, this time unearthing the wisdom behind the mantra.

Either message me or email [email protected] if you'd like more information or to book your place.

Last week I mentioned about feeling a bit irritable, and someone commented that they were feeling much the same way and were using the mudra of tolerance a lot and biting their tongue to stop them saying something they might regret. This reminded me a great summer tip.

Hot weather can make us not just more irritable physically, but also emotionally, and being on a short fuse is sure sign that the hot pitta in you is aggravated.

Here is a great Ayurvedic tip to stop you saying something in the heat of the moment, that you might later regret...

Just before you speak, take a mouthful of cold water. Hold it in your mouth and let it warm to body temperature before swallowing. This should take a couple of minutes, giving you time to think about your reply, rather than coming out with a knee jerk statement, plus it takes the heat out of your body.

And as someone who can be given to a sharp tongue I can tell you this works!

My focus for August is gentleness, my starting inspiration coming from Sandra Sabatini's gorgeous book, 'Breath' :

"It is very beautiful to follow what the body loves. The body loves gentleness.
We are always so rough - especially when it comes to movement. Movement that is born with the breath has beauty."

I think this is so true, what do you make of it?

TUESDAY TRIVIA
The full Locust pose is a fabulous way to wake up our posterior muscle chain (back of the body), activating the spinal extensors, gluteal muscles (buttocks), and hamstrings.

This makes it the perfect posture to counter sitting all day and gives us the strength we need for stronger back bends.

With this benefit in mind, does that make you more inclined to give it a go? :)
