Counselling for Dancers Therapy and workshops with psychotherapist, Terry Hyde MA MBACP, a retired professional dancer

Terry Hyde MA MBACP

Sessions via Zoom, phone as well as face to face. I am a qualified Psychotherapist with an MA in Psychotherapy and Healing Practice, validated by Middlesex University and am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). I have a background in performance and therefore have insider knowledge of the life of a performing artist. Having worked as a professional dancer with two of the UK's main ballet companies, as well as performing in a number of musicals in London's West End and on television, I understand the mental and physical demands that performers experience. From stage fright to burnout, loss of work due to injury, failed auditions, low self-esteem, eating disorders, early retirement or coming to a crossroads in your life, I have seen or experienced all of these. I have also seen many fellow performers struggle with a wide range of personal challenges: from difficult relationships, problems with mental and physical health; in fact the same problems experienced by many people from all walks of life. It doesn't matter where in the world you are you can have sessions via Zoom.

When dancers consider themselves only in terms of performance, it can be difficult to imagine what else they could do. Because of this, they may not recognise how much they could offer in another profession.

Dance training in class, rehearsals and performances develops abilities that employers value, including collaboration, communication, creative thinking, organisation and problem solving.

My new article explores six transferable skills that dancers may already possess and shows how dance experience can be expressed in language that employers outside the profession understand.

The question may then begin to change from “What else can I do?” to “Where else could these skills take me?”

Anxiety is rarely as simple as we think..

There isn’t always one reason behind it, and it doesn’t look the same for everyone.

For performers, understanding some of the things that may contribute to anxiety can be a helpful starting point, not for self-diagnosis, but for self-understanding.

Because you deserve to understand what you’re experiencing, without blaming yourself for it.

A dancer moving into another profession is not starting again from nothing.

Years spent in class, rehearsals and performance develop valuable abilities, although dancers are not always taught how to recognise, evidence or describe them.

In his new article, Terry explores six transferable skills dancers already possess and how they can be communicated to an employer outside the dance profession.
