When someone is carrying heavy emotional pain or suicidal thoughts, conventional advice often defaults to 'just talk about it' or 'reframe your negative thoughts.'

While connection is vital, cognitive reframing often falls short when the nervous system has dropped into a dorsal vagal state (shutdown, numbness, collapse, or deep despair).

In those moments, your prefrontal cortex is offline. You cannot simply logic your way out of profound emotional overwhelm.

What the nervous system needs first is felt safety and co-regulation:
β€’ Physical presence or a calm, grounded voice that does not panic or try to immediately fix things.
β€’ Validating that your pain makes sense given what you have endured.
β€’ Creating a safe container where nothing is too heavy or broken to bring into the room.

Tomorrow is World Su***de Prevention Day. If you or someone you care about is struggling, remember that reaching out is not a burden. Healing happens when we meet our survival states with warmth and somatic safety rather than judgment.

If you are in immediate crisis in the UK, please reach out to Samaritans (116 123) or text SHOUT to 85258.

For ongoing integrative psychotherapy, our doors in Retford and online are open.

If you feel an unexpected spike in tension this week, you are not alone.

September often carries a quiet pressure. Even years after leaving school or university, our nervous systems hold an ingrained conditioning that September means an abrupt shift from ease into high-gear output.

When calendars fill up and routines snap back into place, high-functioning anxiety often flares. You might notice physical bracing, shallow breathing, or a persistent sense of urgency even when nothing is on fire.

In somatic therapy, we recognise this as transition shock. Your sympathetic nervous system is simply trying to brace for perceived demand.

A gentle somatic check-in for today:
1. Notice where you are physically holding tension (jaw, shoulders, stomach).
2. Place one hand over your chest and one on your lower belly.
3. Exhale slowly, making your out-breath longer than your in-breath to signal safety to your vagus nerve.

You do not have to match the rush around you. Give yourself permission to transition at the speed of your body, not the speed of your calendar.

Is anyone else feeling the "summer slump"?

There's a lot of pressure to enjoy every single moment of the summer, but the reality is that burnout doesn't take a holiday. If you're feeling exhausted while everyone else seems to be thriving, you are not alone.

Chronic stress doesn't magically disappear just because the sun is out. In fact, the pressure to "make the most of it" can actually send our nervous systems further into overdrive.

Reminders for this season:
🀍 It's okay to rest when others are busy
🌿 You don't have to earn your downtime
🀍 Your energy levels will naturally fluctuate

If you're struggling to find your balance this summer, I'm here to help. I offer accessible, non-judgmental support online and in-person in Retford. Send me a DM to chat about how we can work together.

Why standard talking therapies don't always work for chronic stress.

Have you ever tried to just "think positive" when you're having a panic attack? It rarely works. That's because you can't always think your way out of a dysregulated nervous system.

While traditional CBT focuses heavily on reframing thoughts, integrative psychotherapy looks at the physical response to stress. When your body feels unsafe, your mind will follow.

We work on:
🌿 Regulating your nervous system first
🀍 Understanding your body's stress responses
🌿 Creating genuine, lasting safety from the inside out

If past therapy hasn't worked for you, it's not your fault. You might just need a different approach. I'm currently taking on clients for face-to-face sessions in Retford and online. Reach out via the link in my bio.

You had a full week off. You slept. You rested.

And you still feel exhausted.

That's not tiredness. That's burnout.

Tiredness goes away with rest. Burnout doesn't - because burnout isn't just about being tired. It's about your nervous system being stuck in a state of chronic stress.

When your nervous system is dysregulated, rest doesn't reach the parts that need healing. You can sleep 9 hours and still wake up depleted. You can take a holiday and come back feeling exactly the same.

This is why "just rest more" doesn't fix burnout.

Integrative psychotherapy works differently. We address both the mental patterns keeping you stuck AND the nervous system dysregulation underneath them.

That's why clients often feel a real shift within just 2 sessions.

If rest isn't working, it might be time to try something that does. πŸ’š

You look like you have it all together, but inside, you're running on empty.

High-functioning anxiety is exhausting because it's completely invisible to the outside world. You might be meeting every deadline, showing up for your friends, and keeping the house tidy, but your nervous system is in overdrive.

Signs your nervous system needs support:
🀍 You can't switch off at the end of the day
🌿 You feel a constant, low-level sense of dread
🀍 You're physically exhausted but your mind is racing

Your hidden struggle is valid, and you don't have to carry it alone.

If you're ready to move from surviving to actually living, I offer integrative psychotherapy both face-to-face in Retford, Nottinghamshire, and online. Send me a message when you're ready.

When anxiety spikes or burnout leaves you feeling overwhelmed, our minds tend to race into the future. If you've been feeling disconnected or trapped in a loop of stressful thoughts, you aren't alone.

Grounding techniques are powerful tools for managing high-functioning anxiety because they gently interrupt your body's stress response and bring your nervous system back to the present moment.

One of the most accessible grounding exercises you can use is the 5-4-3-2-1 method. You can do this anywhere, at your desk, on your commute, or at home.

Take a deep breath and notice:
πŸ‘οΈ 5 things you can see around you
βœ‹ 4 things you can physically touch or feel
πŸ‘‚ 3 things you can hear right now
πŸ‘ƒ 2 things you can smell
πŸ‘… 1 thing you can taste

By engaging your senses, you signal to your brain that you are safe in the here and now.

Save this post for the next time you need a quick mental reset. And remember, if you're struggling to navigate stress on your own, you don't have to. I provide integrative therapy to help you build a practical toolkit for your mental health, both online and here in Retford, Nottinghamshire.

You can be showing up to work, taking care of your family, and ticking off your daily to-do list... and still be completely overwhelmed.

High-functioning stress often looks like "having it all together" on the outside while running on empty on the inside. Because you're still getting things done, it’s incredibly easy to dismiss your own exhaustion or feel like you don't "qualify" for help.

But chronic stress doesn't always look like falling apart. Often, signs of burnout show up as:
🀍 Perfectionism and overworking
🀍 People-pleasing and poor boundaries
🀍 Physical fatigue even after sleeping
🀍 An inability to switch off, relax, or simply rest

Your exhaustion is valid. You don't have to reach a complete breaking point to deserve mental health support.

If you are navigating burnout, high-functioning anxiety, or chronic stress, you don't have to carry it alone. I offer accessible, non-judgmental integrative therapy in Retford, Nottinghamshire, and online. Let's work together to help you find balance again.

Everyone says summer is the time to relax and unwind, so why do you feel more exhausted right now than you did in January? β˜€οΈ

Summer burnout is incredibly common, but it's rarely talked about. The sudden shift in routines, juggling childcare, the pressure of planning holidays, and the unspoken expectation to 'make the most of every sunny day' can easily push an already overwhelmed nervous system into overdrive.

Working with clients here in Retford and across Nottinghamshire, I see this mid-year slump constantly. High-functioning stress doesn't take a summer holiday. If you're navigating work, family, and social expectations, it makes complete sense that your battery is flashing red right now.

Here are a few practical ways to protect your energy this season:
🌿 Notice where you are over-committing. You are allowed to say 'no' to social plans if your body needs rest.
🌿 Drop the guilt. It's okay if your routine looks completely different right now or if you don't enjoy every single moment of the summer.
🌿 Protect your "do nothing" windows. Schedule rest just like you schedule a meeting.

If you're feeling more drained than refreshed, please know you aren't alone. Take a gentle breath today.

If you're looking for support in managing burnout and finding your balance again, my door is open. Send me a message or check the link in my bio to learn more about therapy support.
