At A Place To Call Our Own Independent Special School we place a high value on our outdoor environments. The great outdoors is used daily as a natural extension to the classroom. Everything we do inside can be replicated outside but on a much bigger scale. Free flow access to nature throughout the day also has a huge impact on learner wellbeing, regulation and engagement. We are so blessed to have such incredible spaces and places to play and to learn 🌳🌱🌼

So pleased to have finished this training over the last 15 months and excited to integrate it into my practice 😁

Working somatically can bring a deeper experience of understanding sensations in the body, they may have lived there a while and this approach provides a gentle, safe way we can explore this and find comfort and even release.

In my case studies, it has had a profound impact on:
🟣feeling valued & heard
🟣interoceptive awareness
🟣understanding nervous system responses & how to support self
🟣building on capacity to sit with uncomfortable sensation
🟣autonomy & a felt sense of safety
🟣exploring stimming safely and non-judgementally

and above all a return to occupation - activities & roles that bring fulfilment & meaning 😀

I wanted to share the work of a young neurodivergent budding film maker we have had the privilege of supporting. This short film, 'Safe Space', says so much!

It captures the importance of environments and occupations that are nurturing and safe, and that they don't always have to involve bricks and mortar.

He does an amazing job of showing the contrast between overwhelm and recognising what joy, peace, and relief can look like. We are all different, but finding a safe space to breathe and be you, as this young person clearly shows, is so important.
