Epidemics That Changed Medicine: Measles in Germany, 1831

In the spring of 1831, a severe epidemic of malignant measles struck the community of Oberhörgern, Germany.

These were not simply mild childhood cases. Historical accounts described children suffering from vomiting, diphtheria, typhoid-like symptoms, severe eye infections and pneumonia.

Among children who received no treatment, the reported mortality was 25%.

During the same epidemic, homeopathic physician Dr. Georg A. Weber of Lich treated 87 children homeopathically.

His reported results:

• 87 children treated
• 0 deaths
• 100% survived

The results attracted attention, but what happened afterward is also a fascinating part of the history.

According to the historical account, opposition from local apothecaries contributed to enforcement of restrictions preventing homeopathic physicians from dispensing their own medicines. Dr. Weber was later fined for providing medicines to his patients free of charge. The controversy ultimately prompted 1,300 families in the region to petition authorities to remove the restriction.

Lightbulbs.

Our light exposure has changed drastically over the past 20 years, with the introduction of energy-efficient LED light bulbs. Now, we’re discovering how they're short on red wavelengths, which messes with our mitochondria, contributing to diabetes, dementia and more.

Epidemics That Changed Medicine: Cholera in St. Louis, 1849

In 1849, cholera swept through St. Louis with devastating force. More than 4,000 people died of cholera during the epidemic, representing approximately 4% of the city's population.

Amid the crisis, two homeopathic physicians (Pulte and Ehrmann) documented their seemingly astonishing results treating cholera patients.

Their published record reported:

• 1,613 cases of cholera treated homeopathically
• 51 deaths
• Mortality rate: 3.2%

The results sounded so extraordinary that critics accused the physicians of falsifying them. The results were so difficult to believe that a commission chaired by Alphonso Taft, the father of a future U.S. president, investigated them house by house. The special commission fully exonerated Pulte and Ehrmann and verified the accuracy of their claims.

The numbers offer a fascinating glimpse into the practice of homeopathy during one of the most devastating epidemics in 19th-century America and underscore the tensions homeopathic successes created in the field of medicine.

New research exploring osteosarcoma, an aggressive and metastatic cancer affecting both humans and animals – found that resveratrol and homeopathic mistletoe (Viscum album CH200) showed promising antitumour activity in laboratory studies.

Tested on canine, human, and murine osteosarcoma cell lines, both compounds reduced cancer cell viability and migration in a dose-dependent manner, with apoptosis identified as the main mechanism of action. Researchers suggest these findings highlight the potential of resveratrol and homeopathic mistletoe as supportive approaches alongside conventional chemotherapy, while emphasising the need for further research into their clinical applications and interactions with standard cancer treatments.
