Based on anecdotal evidence from our holiday research study:
1 younger participant reported ' it went really bumpy and my back felt like it clicked and now my posture seems better' - I am now suggesting we should consider trips to The Med as part of your ongoing treatment.

Who's up for that?

I know the might seem like an unusual pairing - a picture of my dogs (again!) and a picture of an amazing book by Bessel Van Der Kolk - but hear me out.

Not everyone always understand the origin of their aches and pains - their endlessly irritable shoulders; nagging headaches or vulnerable lower back. Maybe it's not because of your work or that old injury where you took a tumble but maybe something more deep set and less obvious.

Maybe the symptoms you are experiencing are a testament to how you are processing past experiences and, possibly, how safe you feel. Perhaps you are endlessly in high alert and vigilance or hiding away and keeping yourself unnoticed. The body does keep the score.

This book is an incredible insight into the changing approach to trauma research and treatment. I read it alongside treating someone with a very unhappy history and every page was relevant, if not the most comfortable of reads. I learnt so much.

So, why the dog picture? Well, these are my girls. The black and white one is about a year old. We've had her since a pup and she is full of boundless energy and love for life, everyone and everything. The orange girl is about 9 years old. We've had her since she was 3. She came via a rescue centre in Spain. I wish she could talk. She is the kindest, gentlest soul but she is a bit dysfunctional. It's as if she doesn't quite know how to be happy or be loved. She still cowers and then freezes in certain situations. I wish she could explain her past to us to help us work gently along side this. The tail wags get more frequent and the eye-contact less fleeting but she is still not fully at ease or full of the spaniel joy that we all know and love.

Trauma can present in unexpected ways - the broken narrative; the isolation; the emotional numbness. Patients never actually book in because of these things but usually because of chronic pain and the fatigue that comes with that. Patients who share their dark stories from their past with me perhaps welcome a moment to confidentially offload; to explain themselves; possibly to understand themselves. This is a huge and trusting step. Their body relaxes a little tension as they speak. What a privilege to help with that as a listening ear, an open mind and gentle therapeutic touch.

The work going on inside the clinic meant we needed access to treatment rooms via the back door - and what beauties we found! What looks like a scruffy patch of weeds that no-one cares about is home to plenty of wild flowers, elderflower blossom, butterflies, bugs, a few visiting hefty pigeons (that look like they would struggle with lift off!) and a fox. It's so special - creating a calming, gentle atmosphere where every thing is welcome - just like inside the clinic where everyone is welcome.

It's very important to buy local and especially from the fledgling businesses. 😁 These guys have smashed it - a cute little premises; tasty drinks and goodies; and a solid work ethic. There's been a happy buzz in Motcombe since you arrived. Thank you, Iris. Great to have you on Ocklynge Road.

A lovely patient played me a few tunes yesterday morning on this beautiful pineapple ukele.
What a smooth way to spend a few minutes. I was, however, having a good look at neck, back, shoulder, elbow and wrist postures as she played 🎶🎵- there's a lot going on and we made a few little adjustments which will, hopefully, help her neck pain and headaches.
Good job it wasn't a harp as that could have been tricky getting to the clinic!

This cute little card from a patient plopped through my door this week.
Is this duckling doing a little single leg stand to work on balance, hip stabiliser/core strength or just for fun?
Whatever it is that you do to keep you strong keep at it. Keep it fun and something you enjoy too.
There is also some interesting research around physical strength training and brain health. It also benefits your confidence with movement and keeps you living actively.
Just keep moving!

A dog lead disaster resulted in this hip fracture 4 weeks ago. Ouch! To say the least.

A little while ago she sent this gorgeous message...
✴️ Hi Gail, just to say, think I might not be at Pilates for a little while, as broke my hip (Eddie’s lead got wrapped round ankles and I fell on patio). Discharged from PRH today, but more importantly, just wanted to say how amazing all the Pilates has been in helping me make a speedy recovery. I really wouldn’t have believed how much strength and flexibility it’s given me. The physio rehab exercises were familiar too, so a HUGE thank you. Im so appreciative of what you’ve given me over the past months and so grateful that it’s helped me recover and get home so speedily. If you ever need a testimonial- it’s yours. See you again soonish! ✴️

How incredible to be that kind and positive a few days after smashing up your hip. What a brave soul and Go Pilates!

Anyway fast forward to the end of this week and she is driving and walking without crutches and feeling great just 4 weeks on. Let's big it up for the body's ability to heal when given the right conditions.🙌. She just needed a little help from me with her neck and shoulders which were a bit stiff from using crutches for a month.

A lovely gift from a lovely Pilates person. Perhaps they hope it'll help me with my rights and lefts!
