Calf Tear Rehab - Prague Marathon
Laura came to see me with the goal of completing the Prague marathon after sustaining a calf tear 5 weeks prior. By the time of the first appointment with me the marathon was just over 2 weeks away.
Due to repeated flares, starting and stopping running, difficultly knowing how best to mange it, Laura came for help. Treatment included taping, massage but most importantly a detailed plan to lead her up to marathon day. No amount of 1 treatment was going to get her across the line, she needed a plan.
We used the bounce test (double footed jumping) as our marker of progress with the aim of 10bounces with a pain less then 2/10. To do this we had to load the calf through a gym based rehab programme, working on strength and confidence but pain free initially. We maintained fitness in the gym and advised no more running until marathon day…eek! Exercises were progressed with the aim of working through range in the next week and the concept of understanding that a 2/10 pain was ok to feel during those exercises.
When it comes to physio you will get out what you put in. Laura has been consistent with her rehab and listened to every detail we have talked through, it’s paid off!
