We all have the power to make someone’s day a little brighter. A thoughtful message, a helping hand or a moment of real listening make a bigger difference than we realise. And caring for others does us good too 💞

The Nonviolent Communication (NVC) model - the reverse/empathic listening - and another similar graphic for you today!

As I was explaining last week, NVC is a four-step empathetic framework developed by clinical psychologist Dr. Marshall Rosenberg. It helps individuals express themselves honestly but it also helps us receive others with empathy without triggering defensiveness, as in this new adapted graphic and tweaked prompts.

Empathic listening focuses on reflecting back another person's observations, feelings, needs and requests without injecting judgement or advice. You can frame these reflections as questions, which gives the other person a chance to clarify or dive deeper into their emotions. You essentially empty your mind, set aside your own agenda, past judgments, and urge to fix and stay present with the other person, listening completely!

The foundational premise is that all human behaviors stem from attempts to meet universal human needs.
The communication framework is designed to resolve conflict and express empathy without blame, criticism, or shame. It achieves compassionate connection and enhances relational interactions by focusing on four distinct components: Observation, Feeling, Needs, and Requests, as detailed below and in italics is how you might choose your wording.

Could you see how this method might be helpful to you and your connections/interactions with others? Not only to express your needs but to understand others? Give it a go and let me know how you get on!

Self-compassion isn’t about fixing everything... it’s about how you speak to yourself while you’re in it.

These small, gentle phrases can shift everything.

You don’t have to be perfect to be making progress. ❤️
