Why ultrasound matters in varicose vein treatment
Varicose veins are not always caused by the veins you can see on the surface.

In many cases, the visible veins are the result of reflux in underlying veins, where the valves are not working as they should and blood is flowing backwards instead of moving efficiently back towards the heart.

That is why ultrasound is such an important part of your assessment at Scottish Vein Centre.

It allows us to look beneath the surface and identify:

• Which veins are affected
• Where the reflux is coming from
• Whether there are leak points feeding the visible veins
• Which treatment options may be most suitable
• Whether a combination of treatments may be needed

This information helps us plan treatment properly.

For some patients, laser treatment may be used to treat the larger underlying vein. For others, foam sclerotherapy may be used for the visible, winding veins closer to the surface. In some cases, both may be part of the treatment plan.

With varicose veins, the cause may come from deeper veins that are not visible when you look at your legs. That is why an ultrasound scan is such an important part of your consultation at Scottish Vein Centre.

Your first visit is all about understanding you, not rushing you.

We start with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, concerns and what you’re hoping to achieve.

You’ll then have a Doppler ultrasound scan, carried out by the same specialist who will guide your treatment. This allows us to see exactly what is happening beneath the surface.
