It’s Day 2026. The Euan MacDonald Centre University of Edinburgh is pioneering vital research into motor neuron disease. It unites over 300 scientists, doctors and healthcare professionals across Scotland. It also runs Europe's largest clinical drugs trial for MND, MND SMART.

The Lothian Birth Cohorts - one of the longest follow-up studies of cognitive ageing in the world - were in the news late last week as the BBC ran a report on 'The 90-year-olds at the cutting edge of brain-ageing research'. This is a fascinating story of how ordinary school children became part of a world-leading study into memory, ageing, and the human mind.

Back in 1947, a number of 11 year-old children in Edinburgh took part in some classroom tests. The data was stored and went unused until 2004 when it was rediscovered and a team followed-up with the participants.

Those participants are now turning 90 and their work with Edinburgh researchers has generated a wealth of data for in-depth, high quality research on cognitive, brain, and general ageing, leading to over 700 peer-reviewed publications to date.
