We're closing our volunteer stories with Beth, our Community Ambassador and Inspiring Volunteer Award winner!

Beth attends local events, connects with stakeholders and spreads the word that Pain Concern is here for everyone affected by pain.

She puts it brilliantly herself: Pain Concern "is a small but mighty charity", and volunteers like Beth are a huge part of that.

Thank you Beth, and thank you to all our incredible volunteers!

Meet Paula, who volunteers on our Listener and Reader Panel.

Paula lives with chronic pain and illness herself, and says that volunteering with us feels like contributing to something valuable, while being flexible and manageable enough to fit around her needs.

That means a lot to us. Everyone should feel like they can contribute, whatever their circumstances.

Thank you Paula!

🌿 How can exposure to the natural world help pain?

‘Many healthcare professionals advise their patients with pain to go and spend time in nature. But actually, there’s been very few mechanistic studies done on how nature impacts pain processing…’

In Airing Pain 153, Dr Sam Hughes explains his work on this research gap.

What were the surprising findings?
What do we still need to know?
What can technology do for chronic pain?

Today we have three incredible people to celebrate!

Huge congratulations to Beth, Angie and Edd who received the Team Award at Inspiring Volunteers 2026!

Edd and Angie have been running monthly drop-in sessions at Portobello Library since November 2024, drawing on their own lived experience of chronic pain to support others.
One person they supported told us: "It was very helpful to me knowing that I'm not alone and there are others like me."

Beth has been out in the community since September 2024, attending events like the Meadows Festival and making sure people know Pain Concern is there for them, all while working full time and juggling other volunteering commitments too.

Angie, Beth, and Edd embody the very best of volunteerism. Their compassion, reliability, and unwavering dedication make them truly deserving of this award.

Congratulations Edd, Angie and Beth!
