Labour care
👶 Massage and manual methods in labour, what does the research say?
Research title: Massage, Reflexology and Other Manual Methods for Pain Management in Labour, Smith et al., 2018
This Cochrane review found that massage, warm packs and other manual methods may have a role in reducing labour pain, reducing length of labour and improving women’s sense of control and emotional experience. (PubMed)
The limitations are not minor. The quality of evidence ranged from low to very low, and few trials reported key safety outcomes. That means this is supportive evidence, not a basis for exaggerated claims.
The practical message is that touch can be part of supportive labour care, but it should be framed around comfort, consent, control and choice, not as a guaranteed pain relief method.

Safe Practice Starts Here
Safe practice is built on more than technique. It includes consent, communication, boundaries, record keeping and knowing when to refer. ✅🤲

Pace 🕊️🤲
You can ask to slow down at any time. The pace of the session should feel right for you, not rushed, forced, or uncomfortable.
Your therapist should adapt to you, not expect you to put up with something that does not feel right.

Not every client is the right client

🤝 Building a sustainable practice is not only about filling every appointment.

A good professional fit includes the client’s expectations, the therapist’s skills and scope, communication, boundaries, treatment preferences and whether both people feel comfortable continuing.

Some clients may need a different therapist, another type of support or further assessment. Recognising that is not rejection. It is responsible practice.

Trying to be the right therapist for everyone can lead to unclear boundaries, unsuitable treatment and pressure to work beyond competence. A strong practice is built around appropriate clients, not simply the largest possible number of bookings.

THE EFFECTS OF MASSAGE THERAPY ON SPORT AND EXERCISE PERFORMANCE

💆 Can massage influence performance, recovery and how an athlete feels?
Dakić and colleagues reviewed research examining strength, speed, endurance, flexibility, pain, soreness, fatigue, mood and other outcomes.

The findings were mixed. Massage did not consistently improve strength, speed, endurance or sporting performance. More promising findings were seen for flexibility, soreness, pain, perceived fatigue, mood and relaxation.

For soft tissue manual therapists, the value lies in recognising that subjective and performance outcomes are not interchangeable. An athlete may feel more comfortable, prepared or recovered without showing a measurable improvement in physical capacity.

⚠️ This was a very broad review. It included different populations, techniques, treatment durations and study designs from several decades. This makes it difficult to identify which massage approach, if any, is most useful for a particular athlete.

CT Afferents 🧠🤲
CT afferents are specialised skin nerve fibres that seem to respond best to slow, gentle stroking touch. They are one reason researchers are interested in why some types of touch feel especially soothing or pleasant.
This does not mean touch is a cure, but it does help explain why slow, gentle contact may feel different from fast or forceful pressure.

Multiple sclerosis
🧠 Massage therapy for multiple sclerosis, what does the research say?
Research title: Massage Therapy as a Complementary and Alternative Approach for People With Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review, Heidari, Shahrbanian and Chiu, 2022
This review reported that different massage approaches may improve symptoms in people with multiple sclerosis, including fatigue, pain, anxiety, depression and spasticity. Swedish massage and reflexology were discussed across different symptom areas. (PubMed)
The limitations are clear. MS is highly variable, and the reviewed studies differed in massage type, treatment dose, outcome measures and participant characteristics. Symptom improvement does not mean massage changes the underlying disease process.
The practical message is that massage may be a useful supportive option for some people with MS, but treatment must be adapted around fatigue, heat sensitivity, sensation changes, mobility, spasticity and individual goals.
