The Open Door Edinburgh

The Open Door Edinburgh provides support to older people, those living with dementia, poor health or mobility and those who care for them.

Our Day Services support people at our community hub in Morningside. “I have a dream …to turn loneliness into fellowship, isolation into recognition …and bridge the gap between church and community”. (Peggy Hunter – founder of the Open Door 1982)

And so began this ecumenical venture that has been a presence in the heart of Morningside, Edinburgh for over 32 years. The Open Door continue to be sup

ported by all our local churches, however since we promote inclusivity, our door truly is open to anyone. Over the years, as services have grown so have the number of staff and volunteers needed to provide them. Currently we have 6 staff and are supported by over 70 volunteers.

Whether you’re a seasoned artist or haven’t picked up a paintbrush since school, our wonderful local art instructor, Emilia, will guide you through the entire process—so absolutely no experience is required!

Inspired by the stunning landscapes of Svalbard, FENCE is a powerful exploration of history, politics, and Arctic ecology. The evening will be followed by an open mic poetry session hosted by Catherine Wilson Garry of Push the Boat Out's Rock the Boat open mic, with sign-ups opening from 7pm.

There is a suggested donation of £15 (pay what you can) on the night, with all proceeds directly supporting our vital day services and community work here at The Open Door.

☕ Big News! The Big Give is Back – Join Our Pop-Up Cafe Team!

Our favorite week of the year is just around the corner! The Big Give is back from 22nd – 29th June. We have a fantastic lineup of events planned, but our flagship feature this year is our wonderful Pop-Up Cafe at The Open Door—and we need a brilliant team of volunteers to help us bring it to life!

If you love a good chat, have a friendly smile, and want to support a fantastic cause, this is the perfect opportunity for you.

✨ What You Need to Know:

The Role: Helping us run our lively community cafe. It’s a great way to gain some cafe experience, meet locals, or simply enjoy some meaningful volunteering.

No Experience? No Problem! You don't need any prior cafe experience at all. If you are warm and welcoming, you’re exactly who we’re looking for.

The Vibe: Community at its finest! All of our delicious baking is being generously donated, and the cafe will operate entirely on a pay-by-donation basis.
