Overwhelm.
We can all experience overwhelm at times.
If this is a constant issue though, it takes it’s tole on our thoughts, our bodies and our lives.
How can we recognise it in ourselves?
- We may keep getting sick because our immune system is compromised by fighting off the pressures of stress in our bodies.
- If we find ourselves reacting in a way that that we know is out of proportion to the situation.
- We don’t want to socialise with others in the way we normally would and it seems to have been that way for a while.
- We find it hard to make decisions.
- We find it hard to focus on anything.
- The feeling like we’re fire-fighting our way though our days rather than living them.
- Feeling excessively emotional to what would be our normal.
Then there’s the times that it may be really helpful and compassionate to be able to recognise it in others.
How do we recognise overwhelm in the people around us in life or at work?
- All of the above of course but also, they may be very reactive to any situation that comes up and quick to lose their temper.
- If they find it difficult to accept help.
- If they make social plans but cancel a bit too often.
- All they seem to be able to talk about is how busy they are.
- They can’t quite manage to just sit for a time, relax and have a conversation.
- They need to make all the decisions and be in control of everything.
Whether you recognise this in yourself or in another, have some patience and compassion for you and for them.
Ask for help.
Offer help, but don’t be offended if it’s refused. Even making the offer can make an impact on someone.
Find a way to feel the breathing space in each day.
