Great article in The Times and Sunday Times today championing successful family businesses.

A snippet and a quote from Steve Buck, managing director of Barbour

"Unquestionably Dame Margaret and her daughter, Helen (Barbour's vice-Chairwoman, have been the best bosses I ever had. They've been cracking."

I'd LOVE to know more!

What working culture have Dame Margaret and Helen been able to create?

There are themes of less ego and more shared goals in this article. It's not to romanticise every family business but really interesting perspectives here.

Where do you spend most of your time?

- Blue, feeling motivated and goal focused

- Green, feeling calm, able to connect with others and relax

- Red, feeling under threat and wanting to retreat to safety.

This is the three circles of emotional regulation, adapted from Paul Gilbert's work.

I often use this model with leaders during our 1:1 VIP Wellbeing Sessions.

We work towards awareness, and balancing optimum performance with wellbeing.

A first step is in noticing and observing patterns about the three systems in your life.

A long time ago, I felt so scared about going into work that I thought about driving home as soon as I got there.

I didn't drive home but I so strongly FELT that way.

That particular workplace made me feel:

- small
- left out
- afraid of making mistakes
- a burden
- so incredibly anxious

This wasn't a deliberate act. It was a mixture of the culture, the pressure I felt under and my response to it.

Because I already felt so vulnerable and afraid, I didn't feel able to tell anyone how I truly felt.

The wonderful but equally useless hindsight would say definitely speak up. Find one person you trust either a colleague, HR, occupational health, GP, or family/friend.

The point is when we can tell someone how we feel out loud, those feelings can feel less scary. When they swirl around our minds and bodies we can feel hopeless and overwhelmed.

Thinking back, the situation wasn't actually threatening but the environment and culture made it FEEL that way.

I didn't come into this work by accident.

I have many tales about very difficult experiences of leadership alongside very positive ones. The excellent leaders I've had really shone a light on those who skipped their compassionate leadership modules.

So, from 20 something me, if you feel overwhelmed and helpless about your work situation, do tell someone you trust.

Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Choose your stone ❤️

I love collecting trinkets that support my work.

I know they seem simplistic but sometimes they carry the exact message someone needs.
Though I mostly work remotely I like to share my resources as I would in person.
Every item has their moment at some point.

These are hand painted too, which I love.

My focus is on how we can educate people on burnout prevention and make meaningful changes in their lives.

This work must start within leadership. Leaders need to take the reigns and role model the expression of human experience and struggle.

Leaders also need supported. Everyone needs support regardless of job title or salary.

A few years ago I started designing the Compassionate Leadership System to offer accessible and affordable foundation level change to organisations.

If you are serious about making changes to leadership wellbeing, something has to change. And soon.

We can't ignore it.
