Ever caught your brain telling you a complete lie and just... believed it?
Welcome to Bite Size CBT With Mick@ECBT
In CBT speak these are Thinking Errors - glitchy filters used by our brains as a short cut to view the world and they can cause us to spiral.
Imagine this: Your boss sends you a message . “Do you have 5 mins to chat?”
Your brain: “This is it. I’m getting fired. Going to lose my apartment, live a tent, and eat beans on toasts for the rest of my life.”
Reality: They just needed your help. for something.
Thinking Errors
1. Catastrophizing: Jumping straight to the absolute worst-case scenario.
2. Mind-Reading: Assuming you know exactly what someone else is thinking
3. All-or-Nothing Thinking: “I ate one donut, my entire year of healthy eating is completely ruined.”
How to Stop the Spiral
Try the Catch, Check, Change method:
1. Catch it: Notice you’re spiralling. “Ah, that’s my brain catastrophizing again.”
2. Check it: Look for the actual facts. “Would this hold up in a court of law? What is the actual evidence I am getting fired today?”
3. Change it: Pivot to a realistic, grounded thought. “Probably just have a quick question. I’ll just ask what they need.”
Remember: Thoughts aren’t facts. Don’t believe everything you think! Drop your brain’s favourite thinking error in the comments below! 👇
