There was a time when working with the body in psychotherapy was considered niche - something a small group of practitioners found compelling, while much of the field kept its distance.

Trauma research has now fundamentally reshaped how we think about where experience lives - not just in narrative or cognition, but in the tissue of the body itself. Neuroscience has added weight to this, particularly work on threat response, implicit memory, and autonomic regulation. It's become increasingly difficult to maintain that therapy is essentially a cognitive undertaking that happens to take place in a body.

Alongside this, trauma-informed practice has moved from aspiration to expectation across most therapeutic settings. And meaningful trauma-informed work is, by its nature, body-aware. It encourages us to attend to regulation, to how safety is experienced rather than simply understood, to the ways threat registers before language catches up.

Somatic approaches have long histories - in body psychotherapy, in early analytic thinking, in relational and humanistic traditions. What's happened is that the broader therapeutic field has begun to recognise what body-oriented practitioners have understood for decades: the body isn't a passive context for psychological work. It's the ground from which change actually arises.

The Certificate in Somatic TA integrates somatic awareness with Transactional Analysis theory across three weekends in Edinburgh. The 2026/27 course begins in September. Book now to reserve your place. Link for more details in first comment.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Allister Murdoch, passed away peacefully at the Western General Hospital on Tuesday 16th June 2026.

Allister was a kind, warm and compassionate man whose generosity, wisdom and willingness to support others touched all of us who had the privilege of knowing him. He was always willing to share his expertise, always offering encouragement whenever it was needed.

He was passionate about his work, and his lifetime achievements were many. A pioneer in the field, he dedicated much of his time and energy to improving men's mental health. Allister specialised in working with issues related to gender, sexuality, relationships, diversity, childhood abuse and men affected by domestic abuse

As one of the founding team members of EH1 Therapies, Allister played a vital role in developing a service for men. His vision and commitment left a legacy which we will honour through the work we do. We are on hand at EH1 to talk to anyone whose life has been impacted by Allister who would like to share their thoughts with us.

Above all, Allister reminded us of the importance of looking after ourselves and each other. He would often say, "just be happy", or "take good care of yourself", words that reflected his warmth and regard for those around him.

Allister will be greatly missed by all of us. Be at peace Allister, and thank you for everything you gave to us, and to so many others.

Vicky McMurray is now offering Spinal Flow Technique® at EH1 Therapies, is
currently the only therapist qualified in the Lothian region and one of
3 in the whole of Scotland to be offering this deeply powerful
treatment.
Spinal Flow Technique is a gentle, non-invasive healing modality that
focuses on clearing blockages in the nervous system by accessing
specific points along the spine. Rooted in neuroscience and
chiropractic principles, it aims to identify and release stored stress,
trauma, and tension to restore optimal communication between the brain
and body. Vicky uses light touch to stimulate the body’s innate healing
intelligence, encouraging the natural flow of cerebrospinal fluid and
energy. This technique is designed to enhance physical, emotional, and
mental well-being by promoting balance and alignment in the spine,
nervous system, body and mind.
