Dementia Diagnosis Matters!

September is World Alzheimer’s Month.

The theme this year is “The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters”.

Focusing on reducing stigma and encouraging earlier diagnosis.

Reducing stigma really is important.

Even though 70% of people in care homes have dementia..

70% of people with dementia live in the community - with the effects felt by families, friends, neighbours, workplaces.

Getting an early diagnosis is so important..

It gives medication, post diagnostic and other supports the best chance of being effective.

So if you have concerns about your health and dementia..

Speak to your GP or the Alzheimer Scotland Helpline soon.

'The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters.' - the theme this year for World Alzheimer's Month, starting today.

Sometimes the hardest part is knowing how to begin the conversation.

If you have noticed changes in someone you love, approaching the subject with kindness can make all the difference.

Choose a quiet moment. Explain what you have noticed without making assumptions. Listen to how they are feeling, and suggest taking the next step together.

You might simply say:

“I’ve noticed a few things have been more difficult recently. Have you noticed it too? Perhaps we could speak to someone about it together.”

There may be another explanation for the changes you have noticed, but you do not have to wait until things reach crisis point before asking for advice. Remember...
