Last week we held our Edinburgh Medical School 300 Student Conference - and we can't stop thinking about it! ❤️

Held at the stunning Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the two-day conference explored Medicine and Healthcare – past, present and future, bringing together students from across The University of Edinburgh to share ideas, experiences and perspectives.

From student poster presentations and workshops on topics including mental health, AI in research and self-compassion in healthcare, to inspiring keynote talks, the programme was packed with thought-provoking discussions and fresh ideas.

Open to students across the University studying medicine or healthcare, the conference showcased the incredible breadth of interests and perspectives within our student community.

A huge thank you to all our speakers, and to every student who attended and contributed. The energy, passion and curiosity in the room throughout the conference is what made it so special.

Wish we could do it all again tomorrow!

🩺🕰️ Then & Now: An A-Z of Edinburgh medicine🕰️🩺

Taking you from A-Z, we’re exploring Edinburgh’s rich medical history, uncovering historic hospitals, buildings and locations, and what they are used for today.
H is for the Hospice

Elsie Inglis was one of the first female medical students to graduate from Edinburgh in 1899. That year she set up a practice called ‘The Hospice’ in George Square for the care of poor women providing mainly Gynaecological services.

The Hospice moved to the Royal Mile and merged with the Bruntsfield Hospital in 1907.

Elsie became a suffragette leader and during the first World War she fundraised and formed the ‘Scottish Women’s Hospitals’ with a plan to deliver medical care to soldiers in the field.

The British Army were uninterested and told Elsie to ‘go home and sit still’. However, Elsie persevered and sent units to France, Serbia and Russia.

Remarkably, over 1000 women served with the Scottish Women’s Hospital over the course of the First World War with a number of these being medical students often officially functioning as ‘orderlies’ but requiring to act up as required. They gained excellent clinical experience, albeit in difficult conditions and would help with post op care including wound dressings, assist in surgeries and help manage infectious diseases outbreaks.

As well as dealing with thousands of battle injuries the women also faced many cases of typhus, yet despite this they still managed to conduct ground-breaking research into the diagnosis of gas gangrene by x-ray.

Elsie sadly died while returning from Serbia at the end of the war in 1917.

The Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity Hospital was opened in her memory in 1925 next to Holyrood Park. It had 82 beds and provided modern maternity care with countless Edinburgh ‘Elsie’s’ being born there and many mothers choosing the smaller, more community orientated feel of the Elsie Inglis compared to Simpson’s.

The hospital was closed in 1988 and became a care home.

🎉 Huge congratulations to The University of Edinburgh medical and nursing students behind Edinburgh Medics’ Reveal, an annual student-led dance show that has now raised more than £250,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust!

Now in its 12th year, the show took place at the Usher Hall and raised an incredible £45,860, bringing the total raised to £265,890

Founded by Edinburgh Medical School alumna Catherine Fox in honour of her sister, who was diagnosed with leukaemia as a teenager, the annual dance show continues to bring students together to raise vital funds for young people with cancer.

Take Scotland’s top academics, contentious research, add a comedian and it’s the force of nature that is The Provocateurs - a staple of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe since 2013.

Over a dozen of our colleagues from across the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine are taking part in The Provocateurs this Edinburgh Fringe, and you’ll find them at the Stand Comedy Club.

Brought to you this year in association with Edinburgh Medical School 300, subjects under discussion include women's health, the neuroscience of anxiety, molecular matchmaking, artificial wombs, fighting disinformation, dermatology, zebrafish and declining fertility.

Booking for all shows is now open. Shows begin from 8 August and continue throughout the duration of the Fringe.
