Do braces actually work for scoliosis? 🩺

The honest answer: only in specific cases.

The evidence shows bracing is most effective during adolescence β€” while the spine is still growing. In a skeletally immature patient, a well-fitted brace can help prevent a curve from progressing and, in many cases, avoid the need for surgery.

Once growth is complete, that window closes. Bracing won't correct an established curve in an adult spine.

Which is exactly why accurate diagnosis and timing matter so much.

Mr Mo Akmal, Consultant Orthopaedic & Spinal Surgeon, explains.

Some of the most serious digestive conditions start without a single obvious symptom.

Polyps, inflammatory bowel disease and even early cancers can develop quietly. A bit of discomfort or the occasional spot of blood is easy to brush off β€” but left unchecked, these are the issues that turn into emergencies and major surgery.

Persistent changes in your bowel habits or ongoing abdominal pain are worth taking seriously. A simple screening now can save you from severe pain, an emergency admission, or far more complex treatment later.

Our Colorectal Clinic uses the latest imaging, endoscopic techniques and minimally invasive surgery to find problems early and tailor treatment to you β€” so you get answers and peace of mind, fast.

When it comes to prostate cancer, treatment options vary widely.

Radical treatments such as prostatectomy or radiotherapy remove or target the entire gland. They can be highly effective β€” but they often come with significant side effects.

Focal therapies take a different approach, treating only the affected area of the prostate. Studies suggest they can offer comparable cancer control while substantially reducing side effects, helping men maintain a better quality of life.

At Liv Harley Street, we focus on providing a precise, personalised approach β€” so the treatment fits the individual, not just the diagnosis.

So what actually happens next? 🩺

If we suspect a prostate concern, here's the pathway β€” step by step, no guesswork.

1. PSA blood test
A simple blood test measuring prostate-specific antigen. Quick, straightforward, and the starting point for everything that follows.

2. Specialist MRI scan
A detailed scan of the prostate, giving us a precise picture before any invasive step is considered. This is key β€” it often means a biopsy can be avoided altogether.

3. Precision-guided biopsy β€” only if needed
If the MRI shows something that warrants a closer look, we use a targeted, image-guided biopsy to sample the exact area of concern.

An important note: a raised PSA doesn't mean cancer. It's often caused by a non-cancerous enlarged prostate or infection β€” which is exactly why we investigate properly rather than assume.

Answers, not assumptions.

Are spinal injections as scary as they sound? Not necessarily.

Spinal injections are one of the most effective treatments for reducing inflammation caused by conditions like disc prolapse. At Liv Harley Street Hospital, we typically carry these out under sedation β€” helping keep the experience calm, comfortable, and far less daunting than most people expect.

And good posture? It's more than just "sitting up straight."

True posture correction starts from the inside β€” activating your deep core muscles and learning how to properly support your spine.

Waking up twice a night to p*e. A slower stream than you had at 40. Never quite feeling empty.

Most men file all of it under "getting older" β€” and most of the time they're right: an enlarged prostate is far more common than cancer, and very treatable.

But the symptoms are identical, and 1 in 8 men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. For Black men it's 1 in 4, often younger. Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms at all, so waiting to feel something isn't a plan.

A PSA blood test takes minutes. If anything needs a closer look we can help with that too.

Worth booking if you're 50+, or 45+ if you're Black or your father or brother has had it.
