Moments outside for regulation. Feet in the sea, hearing the music from the wind in the trees. Nature is where my soul settles, my breathing slows, I am present and I find perspective.

Play Therapy and Creative Counselling sessions back soon after the summer break. The language of play offering opportunity to explore through metaphor, symbol and creativity. I love to see my shelves ready for young people to find meaning and connection.

Many people who know me know that I love to read. I’ve just finished reading Jacinda Ardern’s autobiography, and although I don’t usually post about politics, this book left me reflecting on something that feels much bigger than politics. And as if I need to even say it…. What an inspiring woman.

What struck me most wasn’t simply her leadership, it was the value she placed on listening to children and young people. She didn’t just talk about improving the experience of raising children in New Zealand; she wanted to improve the experience of being a child.

She invited children to send postcards with their drawings, thoughts, and words, and she genuinely listened to what they had to say. Her visits to schools weren’t just photo opportunities, they were opportunities to hear directly from children about their lives and experiences. Their voices mattered, and she made sure they were heard.

I’d love to see more of this in the UK and around the world. Leaders who take time to truly listen, understand the experiences of being a child, and use this meaningfully to shape services.

As we’ve almost reached our first year of living in Moray, we’re making the most of the holidays by exploring all this beautiful area has to offer. I’m also taking some time away from the play therapy room to embrace a playful summer with my own children.

Today we spent the day at Gordon Castle walled garden, where we searched for scarecrows, breathed in the scent of the flowers (discovering a dahlia that smelled just like chocolate!), made mud cakes and magical potions, hid in a den, built a fort, skipped across the stepping stones, and constructed towers together.

As a play therapist, I’m frequently reminded that nature is one of the richest play spaces. It invites children to engage their senses, awaken their curiosity, spark their imagination, solve problems, take manageable risks, and create freely.

Children being able to just be themselves. When we slow down and follow their lead, nature becomes a co-therapist of sorts.

So much fun was had today, I’m sure we will be back before the end of the summer holidays.
