My happy place, a place of calm, where nothing else matters and the demands of the day can fade away.

The place where I fill my cup and give myself capacity for whatever is next.

I love where I live ❤️

Wondering if I should move to an outdoor beach model of play therapy 🤔

Children communicate in many ways, words might not be accessible or feel adequate. So in the play room there are many ways to explore feelings. Creativity opens up another way of communicating feelings whether they are big or small, comfortable or uncomfortable, confusing or simple.

When children are in states of high dysregulation the higher level planning parts of their brain are effectively offline so words and labels can literally not be accessible in these moments. Perhaps they will later … in a quiet reflective conversation, in a picture or while sharing a story.

I believe in moving beyond words for communication and regulation.

Play Therapist on Tour ❤️

Spent 48 hours in Edinburgh and I’m on my way home feeling inspired, creatively refuelled and very grateful.

Between good food 🤤, wandering through the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, exploring the Museum of Childhood and a deeply moving visit to the Museum of Palestinian History and Culture, there was time for charity shop treasure hunting for new additions to my play therapy kit.

Plenty of awkward selfies all over the city and I even sat down with Paddington Bear for a wee blether (a Scottish chat for non Scottish friends!).

The highlight was facilitating a creative clinical supervision session with a wonderful group of trainee play therapists. Holding space for reflection, creativity, connection and growth.

I’m reflecting as I travel home on the importance of self care, and how inspiration for therapeutic work often comes from the moments in between the therapy or supervision.

Sometimes as parents we are so focused on ‘getting it right’ for our children we can neglect our own nervous system. Meeting their needs, supporting their emotions, anticipating challenges, dealing with conflicts.

Our regulation matters too….. In fact noticing our body, breath, thoughts and feelings while finding time to regulate and soothe will help us to be co regulators for our children.

Co regulation comes before regulation. children will pick up on the authenticity in connection that comes when we have also taken care of ourselves.

Find what works for you. for me it’s the beach for others it’s a cosy space, a dance, a run, a scream, a cold drink…… sitting on the floor of the utility room with your kindle cos it’s the only place you can get a moment of peace 👀 …… on days that I can’t get to the beach!

There may not be a lot of time, but give yourself a moment or more of what you need?

This week is week, and there's no better time than now to share the impact play can have on children's mental health.
Play encourages children to:

🤔 Learn about themselves and how to be in the world
👩🏻‍🤝‍🧑🏾 Build strong relationships
🗣 Communicate thoughts and feelings
💡 Learn about resilience and problem-solving

Take a look at a collection of our resources to understand how play is a simple and effective way to encourage happy and healthy children 👇

I visited The Paddock Broom of Moy today and reading this post describes exactly what my own nervous system did there. An inviting space, we were greeted first by very friendly sheep. It felt like a world away from rushing around and unrealistic expectations of our time and capacity. Their generous nature and child focused approach shone through when talking with Beccie and Lesley. A wonderful experience and environment for neurodivergent children. Thank you for showing us around and for the rhubarb! I also picked up some wool as another souvenir of my visit!
