“But they managed it yesterday…”
This is something I wish more people understood about neurodivergent children. 🧠
Being able to cope with something once doesn’t necessarily mean they can cope with it every time.
Yesterday they might have:
✔️ slept well
✔️ had a predictable morning
✔️ eaten enough
✔️ had fewer sensory demands
✔️ felt emotionally regulated
Today?
Their capacity might already be nearly full before the thing you’re asking them to do even happens.
So something they managed easily yesterday suddenly results in tears, refusal, anger or overwhelm today.
That isn’t necessarily inconsistency.
And it doesn't automatically mean they're “trying it on”.
Their capacity has changed.
Looking beyond the behaviour and asking “what else is going on here?” can completely change how we respond. 💛
