Many people spend years trying to make sure everybody else is happy.

They say yes when they want to say no.

They avoid conflict.

They worry about disappointing people.

They spend hours replaying conversations and wondering what others think.

The problem is that approval seeking often creates the very anxiety and self-doubt we're trying to avoid.

I've written a new article exploring why approval seeking keeps anxiety going and what can help.

You can read it here: https://danreganhypnotherapy.co.uk/dans-blog/anxiety-stress-a-panic-attacks/why-approval-seeking-keeps-anxiety-going/

Have a good weekend.

One of the most common fears I help people with is public speaking anxiety.

- Presentations
- Work meetings
- Interviews
- Wedding speeches
- Networking events

People often tell me:

"What if I go blank?"

"What if people notice I'm nervous?"

"What if I make a fool of myself?"

What's interesting is that psychology research consistently shows that people:

- notice less than we think
- judge us less harshly than we expect
- often can't tell we're anxious anyway

Many of the fears surrounding public speaking are based on assumptions our anxious mind makes rather than what is actually happening.

I've recently updated several articles on public speaking anxiety, confidence, the spotlight effect and the illusion of transparency if you'd like to learn more: https://danreganhypnotherapy.co.uk/confidence-ely/

And if public speaking anxiety is holding you back, you're welcome to arrange a free initial consultation.

Have you ever caught yourself worrying about what other people might think?

One of the biggest things that used to fuel my own anxiety was worrying about what other people thought of me. I'd overthink conversations, worry about saying the wrong thing and imagine that everyone was noticing things that felt glaringly obvious to me.

What I didn't realise at the time is that psychologists have actually studied this.

It's called the 'spotlight effect' - the tendency to overestimate how much attention other people pay to us.

The reality? Most people are far more focused on their own worries, plans and daily lives than they are on analysing ours.

That doesn't make anxiety feel any less real when you're experiencing it, but it can be reassuring to know that the fear of judgement is often far more exaggerated than the reality.

I've written more about the research and why it matters for confidence, anxiety and social anxiety here: https://bit.ly/4fHYW1h

Many people think they have a confidence problem in one area of life.

What they often discover is that self-doubt has gradually started affecting much more than they realised.

One client described how they went from avoiding opportunities, worrying what other people thought and lacking confidence in themselves, to:

✔ Starting a successful business

✔ Building a full client base

✔ Networking confidently

✔ Becoming far more socially active

✔ Feeling happier and more positive

Confidence isn't about becoming somebody different.

More often it's about becoming comfortable being yourself and trusting your own abilities.

Last night I attended the SME Cambridgeshire Business Awards after being shortlisted in three categories:

🏆 Ely Business of the Year
🏆 Service Excellence
🏆 Business Innovation

Although I didn't come away with an award this year, I'm incredibly proud that Dan Regan Hypnotherapy was recognised alongside so many successful businesses from across Cambridgeshire.

As a local independent practice, it's a privilege to spend my days helping people overcome anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, fears, phobias and confidence issues.

A huge thank you to everyone who has trusted me, left a review, recommended me to others or supported the practice in any way.

The recognition is appreciated, but what matters most is helping people feel happier, calmer and more confident in their everyday lives.

Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists, and here's to another year of helping as many people as possible.

Many people with social anxiety become experts at hiding it.

From the outside they may appear calm, capable and “fine”.

Internally though, they may be:

– overthinking conversations
– worrying what others think
– monitoring themselves constantly
– replaying situations afterwards
– feeling emotionally exhausted around people

Social anxiety is often far more than simply 'being shy'.

It can quietly affect confidence, relationships, work situations and enjoyment of life for years before someone finally reaches out for help.

I know this both professionally and personally because I used to struggle badly with social anxiety myself.

One of the biggest changes people often notice as anxiety improves is not becoming a different person - but simply feeling more comfortable being themselves around other people.

I’ve recently updated an article exploring why social anxiety can feel so exhausting and why these patterns can change:

https://danreganhypnotherapy.co.uk/dans-blog/anxiety-stress-a-panic-attacks/social-anxiety-why-we-need-more-than-just-conversation/

Many people appear to be coping perfectly well on the outside while internally feeling mentally exhausted, overwhelmed or unable to properly switch off.

Overthinking, stress and anxiety can gradually become so normal that people forget what it feels like to properly relax mentally.

Following my recent article in the Ely Standard and several other local newspapers, I’ve written a new article exploring why so many people feel mentally exhausted right now and how anxiety can quietly affect everyday life.

The article explores:

– overthinking and racing thoughts
– emotional exhaustion
– feeling constantly 'on edge'
– why anxiety often becomes habitual
– why things can gradually become more manageable again

If this sounds familiar, support is available - and you’re definitely not the only one experiencing it.

One of the most frightening things about anxiety can be the fear that you may somehow 'lose control'.

Many people experience thoughts such as:

“What if I panic?”

“What if I lose control of myself?”

“What if I embarrass myself?”

“What if I’m going crazy?”

When anxiety is high, these fears can feel extremely real and convincing.

But fears around losing control are actually a very common part of anxiety and panic patterns - even though many people feel deeply alone with these thoughts when they first experience them.

I’ve written an article exploring why anxiety creates these fears, how panic intensifies them and why things can gradually become calmer and more manageable again.

https://danreganhypnotherapy.co.uk/dans-blog/anxiety-stress-a-panic-attacks/fear-of-losing-control-and-anxiety/

Many people who struggle with anxiety become very good at hiding it.

From the outside they may still be:

- working
- socialising
- looking after family
- getting through everyday life

Yet internally they may be dealing with:

• overthinking
• panic attacks
• stress
• fear of judgement
• emotional exhaustion

One of the things I’ve noticed repeatedly in my work as an anxiety therapist in Ely is just how many people quietly struggle for a long time before reaching out for support.

For Mental Health Awareness Week, I’ve written a new article exploring this in more detail:

Stress and worry don’t always look dramatic from the outside.

For many people, it’s the constant background pressure, overthinking and inability to properly switch off that becomes exhausting over time.

I recently shared a new real client case study from someone who described exactly this experience before hypnotherapy sessions in Ely.

Over time, things became calmer, more manageable and they felt more in control again.
