Cuilcagh Medical Practice now has access to a First Contact Physiotherapist (FCP) through the GP Federation, with appointments available at the practice.

Our First Contact Physiotherapist is an experienced musculoskeletal specialist who can assess, diagnose and advise on a wide range of muscle, joint and bone problems.

They can help with conditions such as:
✔️ Back pain
✔️ Neck pain
✔️ Shoulder pain
✔️ Knee pain
✔️ Hip pain
✔️ Sprains and strains
✔️ Sports injuries
✔️ Arthritis and joint pain

There is no need to see a GP first for these types of problems. Our reception team can book you directly with the physiotherapist if appropriate.

The physiotherapist will assess your condition, provide advice and exercises, and, where necessary, arrange further investigations or refer you to the most appropriate service.

If you’re unsure whether the service is suitable for you, our reception team will be happy to help.

Did you know that patients registered with our practice can now be booked directly with a **First Contact Physiotherapist (FCP)** at the surgery?

Our Federation Physiotherapist can assess, diagnose and advise on a wide range of muscle, joint and bone problems – often without the need to see a GP first.

Conditions that may be suitable include:
✅ Back pain and neck pain
✅ Joint pain (shoulder, knee, hip, ankle, etc.)
✅ Sprains and strains
✅ Sports injuries
✅ Arthritis-related joint problems
✅ Tendon and ligament problems

The physiotherapist can:
• Assess your symptoms
• Provide a diagnosis
• Give expert advice and exercises
• Arrange investigations if required
• Refer to other services when appropriate

✈️☀️ Planning a Summer Holiday? Travel Health Tips Before You Go! ☀️✈️

If you're travelling abroad this summer, a little preparation can help you stay healthy and enjoy your holiday.

✅ Make sure you have travel insurance
Travel insurance is essential, even if you're travelling within Europe.

🇪🇺 Apply for your FREE UK GHIC card
The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives access to necessary state healthcare in many European countries. It does not replace travel insurance, but it can help with the cost of emergency healthcare abroad.

💊 Remember your regular medications
• Pack enough medication for your entire trip, plus a few extra days in case of delays
• Keep medicines in their original packaging
• Carry essential medications in your hand luggage
• Check whether you need a doctor's letter for certain medications before travelling

🦟 Protect yourself from insect bites
• Use an insect repellent containing DEET
• Wear long sleeves and trousers, particularly in the evenings
• Sleep under mosquito nets where advised
• Cover exposed skin to reduce the risk of bites

☀️ Stay safe in the sun
• Use sunscreen with a high SPF and reapply regularly
• Wear a hat and sunglasses
• Stay hydrated and seek shade during the hottest part of the day

🍹 Avoid risky behaviour
Alcohol and unfamiliar environments can increase the risk of accidents and illness. Take sensible precautions to keep yourself and your family safe while away.

🩹 Insect bites
Insect bites are common after holidays and usually improve with simple measures such as antihistamines, cooling creams or advice from your local pharmacist. Antibiotics are not routinely needed unless there are signs of infection such as increasing redness, swelling, pain or fever.

🦴 **New Physiotherapy Service Now Available Through the Practice**

We are delighted to let patients know that **First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs)** are now available through the practice as part of the SW GP Federation MDT service.

Our physiotherapists are based in the practice. They are specially trained to assess and manage many muscle, joint and bone (MSK) problems and patients can now be offered a direct appointment with the physiotherapist by our reception team — without needing to see a GP in first in many cases.

Conditions suitable for physiotherapy include:
✔ Back pain
✔ Neck pain
✔ Joint pain and arthritis
✔ Muscle, tendon and ligament injuries
✔ Sports injuries and sprains
✔ Nerve-related symptoms such as pins and needles or numbness

This service aims to help patients access the right care more quickly and receive expert assessment and advice at an earlier stage.

Some conditions may still need review by a GP or hospital service, and the physiotherapist will advise if this is necessary.

💙 **Why does reception ask about my symptoms?**

When you contact the practice, our reception team may ask a few questions about your symptoms.

This is part of a process called **Care Navigation** and helps us make sure patients are directed to the **right service, at the right time**.

Depending on your symptoms, this may be:
👩‍⚕️ A GP
💉 A nurse
🦴 A physiotherapist
💊 A pharmacist
🧠 A mental health practitioner
or another appropriate service.

Our reception staff are "Care Navigators" that are trained to do this safely and professionally, and all information shared is treated in the strictest confidence — just as it would be with a clinician.

By helping us understand a little about your problem, we can often ensure you receive the most appropriate care more quickly.

Who can get the vaccines?
