Bumped into Gerald Cooper from today. He was genuinely chuffed that I recognised him and asked for a photo ...he even said it hardly ever happens. I asked him how he was doing after his very public cancer diagnosis because I wouldn’t have felt right just walking away without checking in. Thankfully, he said he’s doing well and enjoying a bit of sunshine by the beach in Minehead.

As I walked away, it got me thinking about men’s mental health in farming. It’s a tough life...long days, hard graft, money worries, and the isolation of working alone through all seasons, often feeling like they’ve just got to “crack on” and keep quiet. A 2025 survey by the Farm Safety Foundation found that 91% of farmers believe poor mental health is one of the biggest hidden problems facing the industry. In a male dominated Industry a large proportion of those stats will be men.

The sad truth is that too many men, many of those in farming, struggle in silence. Sometimes all someone needs is for a mate to ask, “How are you doing?” and actually mean it.

has helped shine a light on the pressures farmers face, and if there’s one thing we can all do it’s check in on the blokes around us. Pick up the phone, have a chat, have a brew. You never know how much it might mean.

A bright and breezy Men's Sunday Social this morning led by Phil Lots of new faces this week as the walk grows week on week.

We've noticed some of our walkers are coming far and wide to join us up on the Downs. Hitting the snooze button on a Sunday morning sometimes seems more preferable to getting up and getting our boots on. To see blokes getting in a car to drive an hour to join a bunch of strangers for a walk in a town they don't know highlights the commitment they are making to themselves ... snooze was an option but instead they got their boots on and took the steps to get out...well done fellas! 👏

Our walk + talk is a welcoming space for blokes to get support and find their voice. If you fancy joining us drop us a DM

If you are in the Epsom, Ewell, Great Tattenhams, Langley Vale, Sutton, Burgh Heath, Tadworth, Ashstead, Bookham, Headley, Dorking, Cheam, Effingham, Banstead, Carshalton, Kingswood and beyond come along, we’d be pleased to meet you.

A bit about the walks:

🔸The walks are free

🔸Offers a space to talk without judgement

🔸No pressure to talk you may just want to listen

🔸Make new friends and build your support network

🔸Give your mind space to declutter

🔸Get out stretch your legs and breathe fresh air

The important bits 👇

â–¶Meet outside the Rubbing House pub at 9.50am for a 10am start

▶We walk for an hour then have tea and a chat after at Keith’s tea hut

â–¶Wear decent walking boots as the terrain can be muddy and slippery in the colder wet months

â–¶Participants must be over 18 - safeguarding

â–¶You are responsible for your own safety

**The walks are filmed and photographs are taken to document our journey and share on our socials. We do of course respect anyone who does not wish to be filmed or photographed - please let us know on the day**

Don’t forget the biscuits! 🍪

Part of what we do at is use our voice to talk about our experiences. Real life conversation just hits different, eye contact, emotion, stories of hope, relatable experiences.... It all has a massive impact.

Proud of these fellas for volunteering their time to tell their stories out in the town. To think some of these blokes hadn't found their voice until recently and now they are sharing their stories freely with strangers...that's a huge step forward!

Also a bit of behind the scenes of a small initiative. Sometimes we have to get a bit resourceful to make it all work!

We walk every Sunday and we hold monthly if walking isn't your thing - join us!

What a fantastic weekend in the community hub at the Epsom Derby. We Power On not only supports blokes but their families too which made Saturday an extra special day.

"Taking men's mental health by the reins, stride by stride" is the message proudly displayed nice and high on our bus. The fellas turned out despite the rain, we all got stuck into dressing up the bus, got talking with people about the walks and connected with other local initiatives doing good work in our community. The highlight of the day being interviewed by Thank you to everyone who sent snippets of the coverage and messages of support. what a brilliant moment hearing the fellas talk about what WPO means to them to millions of viewers.

The and have supported our Mens Sunday Socials for years, an inevitable connection as Epsom Downs is so deeply rooted in horse racing tradition. The horse racing community encourages us, strides alongside us, donate funds, share what we do and cheer us on every step of the way.

Thank you to for making this happen, thanks to for giving us an amazing bus on the famous Tottenham Corner and thank you to for getting those banners done last minute! And a big thank you to the fellas for supplying the tea, food, bunting and balloons and for of course bringing their family and friends.

We walk shoulder to shoulder every Sunday rain or shine. If you are a bloke who could do with getting out or if you know a bloke who could benefit from a walk ... join us! The walks are free, no obligation to sign up, no pressure to talk and are judgement free. We also hold men's monthly socials which is another way to build a personal support network and have a third space to retreat too when life and work gets overwhelming.

Keep powering on!
