'Reminiscence at Home' - a new series on reminiscence.

Reminiscence is simply the act of looking back on meaningful moments- childhood memories, favourite songs, old hobbies, or treasured family stories. For older adults, especially those living with dementia, these memories can feel clearer and more comforting than recent events.

If you’re supporting an older loved one at home, we're going to give you ideas to weave reminiscence into daily life.

Tip 1: Ask about their childhood meals while cooking together and play music of their era during morning routines.

You'll find these everyday touches help build connection, reduce stress, and create a sense of comfort and familiarity.

Home Instead’s approach uses reminiscence to support person‑centred care - stay tuned for our next reminiscence tip!

A dementia-friendly community is one where people can move around with more confidence.

Simple changes in local shops, cafés, libraries, community centres and public spaces can help someone living with dementia feel safer and less overwhelmed.

This might include:

• Clear signs
• Good lighting
• Easy-to-read menus
• Quiet seating areas
• Staff who are willing to help
• Clutter-free walkways
• Simple directions to toilets or exits

These changes do not only support people living with dementia. They can make places feel more welcoming for older adults, carers, families and the wider community too.

At Home Instead, we know that staying connected locally can help people maintain confidence, routine and a sense of belonging.

As loved ones get older, it is natural for families to want to know they are not only safe at home, but also enjoying regular company, eating properly and continuing to do the things that matter to them.

Companionship care can provide that extra support while helping someone maintain their independence.

A Home Instead Care Professional can visit for conversation and company, help prepare a meal, support with everyday tasks, enjoy a favourite hobby together, accompany someone to an appointment or simply head out for a walk or a coffee.

Over time, familiar visits can build a genuine relationship, giving your loved one someone they know and trust, and giving the wider family added reassurance that they have regular support around them.

Creating a dementia-friendly community starts with how we treat people.

For someone living with dementia, everyday situations can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming. They may need a little more time to find the right words, make a decision, count money, follow directions or explain what they need.

One of the most helpful things we can do is slow down.

A calm voice, a warm smile and a little patience can make a big difference.
Try to:
• Give people time to respond
• Use clear, simple language
• Avoid rushing or correcting unnecessarily
• Offer reassurance if someone seems unsure
• Remember that confusion is not rudeness

At Home Instead, we believe every person deserves to feel respected, included and understood, wherever they are in the community.

Music can be incredibly powerful for someone living with dementia.

A favourite song, hymn, dance tune or piece of music from earlier life can bring back feelings, memories and emotions, even when words are harder to find.

You could create a simple playlist of songs your loved one enjoys, perhaps music from their younger years, wedding music, favourite artists, songs from films, or music they used to dance to.

Try listening together over a cup of tea, singing along, clapping gently, or simply enjoying the moment.

At Home Instead, our Care Professionals often use music as a way to bring comfort, spark conversation and support meaningful connection.

Sometimes, a familiar song can say what words cannot.

For someone living with dementia, familiar surroundings can offer comfort and reassurance.

Try to keep everyday items in consistent places, such as keys, glasses, medication, the TV remote or favourite mugs.

It can also help to use clear labels, simple signs or pictures on cupboards, drawers and doors, especially in areas like the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.

The aim is not to change everything at once. It is to gently make the home easier to understand and move around in.

At Home Instead, our Care Professionals take time to learn each client’s routines, preferences and the little things that help them feel settled.

Because good dementia care should always feel personal.

Getting out and about can be so important for wellbeing, confidence and connection.

For some clients, it might be a short walk to the local park. For others, it might be visiting a supermarket, attending a singing group, enjoying a coffee, or going along to a memory café.

These moments may seem simple, but they can bring routine, joy and a real sense of belonging.

To our brilliant Care Professionals, what local activities have you enjoyed with your clients this week?

Tell us in the comments, we would love to celebrate them.

No two clients are the same, which is why care should never feel one-size-fits-all.

Some people love a lively chat. Others prefer a quieter presence. Some enjoy getting out and about, while others feel happiest at home with familiar routines.

At Home Instead, we take time to understand each client’s preferences, priorities and personality. We then carefully match them with Care Professionals who can support them in a way that feels comfortable and reassuring.

This approach helps build strong relationships, familiar routines and a sense of trust.

Whether it is preparing a favourite meal, walking the dog, listening to treasured music or sharing stories from the past, our care is shaped around the person receiving it.
