Know Your Skin: Why Early Checks Matter

Most moles are completely harmless. But skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK — and when it's found early, treatment is usually simpler and outcomes are far better.

The difficulty is that the naked eye can only tell you so much. That's where dermoscopy comes in.

Dermoscopy or Dermatoscopy uses a specialist handheld device with magnification and polarised light to see structures beneath the skin's surface that aren't visible on ordinary examination. It helps distinguish harmless moles from lesions that need further assessment — and in most cases, it's what allows us to offer clear reassurance.

Mole mapping creates a photographic record of your skin, so changes can be tracked over time. It's particularly useful if you have numerous moles, atypical moles, a personal or family history of skin cancer, or fair skin that burns easily.

At Hinchley Medical, both are provided in-house by Dr Alireza Salehzadeh, who has undertaken advanced dermatology training including dermoscopic lesion assessment. You'll have an unhurried consultation, a full examination, and a clear explanation of what's been found. If anything requires specialist input, we arrange onward referral promptly.

Worried about a new or changing mole? Don't wait and wonder — the vast majority of people who come to us leave reassured.

🩺 Around 7.2 million people in the UK have chronic kidney disease. Roughly a million don't know it.

CKD is silent. No pain, no warning, no obvious change — symptoms often appear only once much of your kidney function has gone. A Lancet series published this June found up to half of cases worldwide remain undiagnosed.

Finding it early takes more than one test

BLOOD — creatinine and eGFR, showing how well your kidneys filter.

URINE — ACR, showing whether protein is leaking through. Often abnormal before eGFR falls, yet over 70% of people with high blood pressure have never had it.

ULTRASOUND — the part bloods can't tell you. A quick, painless scan with no radiation, showing kidney size, scarring, cysts, stones and any obstruction, and whether the bladder empties. Blood and urine measure function; ultrasound shows structure. A normal scan doesn't rule out CKD — which is exactly why they work together.

Medicines that can worsen kidney function: regular ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac · long-term omeprazole or lansoprazole · lithium · some antibiotics · some herbal supplements · and the "triple whammy" of an ACE inhibitor/ARB + diuretic + anti-inflammatory during a vomiting or diarrhoeal illness.

⚠ But never stop an ACE inhibitor, ARB or SGLT2 inhibitor on your own. A small creatinine rise when these are started is expected — they are protecting your kidneys.

Caught early, CKD is very treatable: blood pressure control, ACE inhibitors/ARBs, SGLT2 inhibitors such as dapagliflozin and empagliflozin, finerenone in diabetic kidney disease, statins, weight and glucose management, salt reduction and annual monitoring. Most people diagnosed early will never need dialysis.

Our Health Checks include kidney function and, where indicated, urine ACR and ultrasound — alongside blood pressure, HbA1c and cholesterol, all reviewed properly with a GP.

Liver conditions are often silent — until the damage is done.

Around 1 in 3 UK adults are thought to have fatty liver disease. Most have no idea.

Fatty liver, now known as MASLD, develops silently. No pain, no jaundice, no obvious warning sign. But over years it can progress to inflammation, scarring and ultimately cirrhosis. It's also closely linked to type 2 diabetes, raised cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Two things tend to surprise our patients:

You don't have to be a heavy drinker. Fatty liver is driven largely by metabolic factors — weight around the middle, insulin resistance, blood lipids. Plenty of people who drink little or nothing have it.

Normal blood tests don't rule it out. Liver function tests can come back entirely reassuring while significant fat is present. Bloods alone are not enough.

That's precisely why we scan.

Health checks at Hinchley Medical include:

Liver ultrasound scan — direct imaging to assess fatty change, texture and structure

Comprehensive blood profile — liver function, HbA1c, full cholesterol panel, kidney function, thyroid and full blood count

Cardiovascular and metabolic assessment — blood pressure, BMI, waist circumference and cardiovascular risk scoring
A full consultation with a GP to explain your results properly and agree a clear plan

Most of the conditions that shorten lives are silent in their early stages and highly treatable when caught there. Early-stage fatty liver is often reversible. And checking annually lets us track your trend over time, which tells us far more than any single result.

You look after everything else. Book the appointment that looks after you.

— Happy Nowruz 1405!🌿 نوروزتان پیروز
As the spring equinox marks the start of a new year, we send warm wishes for health, renewal and prosperity to all our patients, colleagues and community celebrating Persian New Year.
This Nowruz carries a deep sorrow. This year thousands of innocent Iranians — men, women and children — were killed by the Islamic Republic regime for daring to protest for a better life. Many more were arrested, tortured, and denied medical care. Hospitals were raided, nurses were r***d, doctors were imprisoned and sentenced to death. Families were denied the right to mourn.
We remember them. We stand with the brave people of Iran, whose courage and sacrifice in the face of unimaginable brutality must not be forgotten or ignored. May their fight for freedom, dignity and justice not be in vain.
This new year, we hold onto the deepest meaning of Nowruz — that even after the darkest winter, spring will come.
