"You Can Discover More About a Person in an Hour of Play than in a Year of Conversation" (Plato)

Hi all... Hollow Lane Club is a charity that I have been involved with over the last 20 years in different capacities, currently acting as a Trustee for... and is something that I am really passionate about. If you see the video on the justgiving page you will see why. We are currently going through a period of financial difficulty. There are positive signs ahead, but we just need to get over this hurdle to get there. We would be very grateful for any donations that you can make to keep the extraordinary work that this club does, going. Thank you ###

Things that I have been involved with: I have been contracted with SEN alternative educational services, a year at a time, developing a Play Based Curriculum. The foundations of this was routed in the engagement model and the P-Levels, combining this with Sensory Integration, Communication Development, understanding of trauma and how this affects the individuals development, as well as their unique diagnosis and neurological processing, developing individualistic learning plans that reflect the child/young person's own developmental trajectory.

Just taking a little time to share a bit about me...

I am qualified and experienced (10 yrs+) Play Therapist who works with children who have experienced developmental difficulties, relationship difficulties and trauma. These concerns often manifest in the child’s behaviour. I specialise in working with children and young people who have experienced several difficult transitions in their life, considering the numerous forms of loss that are attached to each life event that children need support to work through. I have additional experience in working with children diagnosed with complex learning disabilities (PMLD) having worked within special needs schools for several years. Robert works in an extremely child-focused way. In therapy, the child leads the way, and the therapist follows. This is a nurturing experience in which the child/young person is able to find their words to communicate and express themselves through the creative tools available.

The non-directive Play Therapy approach, developed by Virginia Axline

Axline believed that children, when offered a safe, accepting and permissive therapeutic space, naturally move towards healing and growth. Her non-directive, child-centred approach gave children permission to communicate their inner world through play – their most natural language – rather than words alone.

Her core principles still sit at the heart of ethical Play Therapy practice today:

🧸 Unconditional positive regard
🧸 Deep respect for the child’s autonomy
🧸 Trust in the child’s innate capacity to heal
🧸 Play as meaningful communication, not “just play”

At British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT), these principles continue to guide evidence-based, trauma-informed practice that supports children to process experiences, build emotional resilience, and develop a stronger sense of self – at their own pace, in their own way.

Axline reminded us that “the child leads, the therapist follows” – a philosophy that remains as powerful and relevant today as it was when she first articulated it.

💚 Play is not an extra.
💚 Play is not a reward.
💚 Play is the work.

World Mental Health Day 2025.... 'it's good to talk.'
Sometimes we don't know what is happening around us,
how another is doing beneath the surface,
the brave face that they may be putting on...
I find myself reflecting on the importance of connection, being present, being available, and to listen...
Small, close-knit communities, are so vital in this world...
