There's a big difference between starting over and continuing after a setback.

Most progress is built by returning to what was helping, not by repeatedly beginning again.

Falling back into something familiar can feel frustrating, especially when you’ve been trying to do things differently. It’s not a sign that nothing has changed, it’s just a well-practised pattern showing up again.

There are certain ways of responding that become deeply familiar over time. You might find yourself worrying about the same things, avoiding the same situations, or reacting in ways you've seen countless times before.

That familiarity can be frustrating, particularly when you've spent time working on yourself and genuinely want things to be different.

But familiar patterns don't disappear simply because you've become aware of them. Awareness is important, but it doesn't instantly overwrite years of habit and experience.

Sometimes progress looks less like never having the pattern again, and more like recognising it sooner. The pattern may still show up, but it doesn't take over in quite the same way.

Seeing an old pattern show up again doesn't automatically mean you've gone backwards.

The important part isn't whether it appears. It's how quickly you recognise it and what happens next.

A dip in consistency can feel like everything’s undone.
In reality, progress tends to hold more than it feels like in the moment.

It’s less about starting again and more about continuing from where you are.

One of the most difficult parts of making progress is that nobody really prepares you for the fact that setbacks still happen.

There's often an expectation that once you've understood something, worked on it, or started doing things differently, it shouldn't affect you in the same way again. So when an old feeling returns, or you find yourself struggling with something you thought you'd moved past, it can feel incredibly discouraging.

What makes setbacks difficult isn't always the setback itself. It's what we decide it means.

It's very easy to interpret a difficult week as evidence that you've gone backwards, when it may simply be evidence that you're human and dealing with something challenging.

Progress rarely removes life's ups and downs. It changes how you respond to them.

Progress can feel confusing because we tend to judge it in the moment.

A difficult day can suddenly make it feel like nothing has changed, even when the overall picture tells a very different story.

Change tends to build gradually, through repetition rather than one-off effort. Returning to something, even in small ways, is often what makes it stick.

Let’s talk about small wins.

They’re easy to overlook, especially when you’re comparing yourself to how things used to feel or how you think things should be.

When energy is lower, even small steps carry more weight than they might seem at first. Getting something started, following something through, or doing a version of what you intended might not feel significant in the moment, but they build over time.

Progress doesn’t always feel like progress while it’s happening, which is why it’s so easy to miss.
