Even when you thought you were coping
Many people worry that this means they are moving backwards.
A song.

A smell.

A photograph.

A familiar place.

Sometimes grief arrives unexpectedly.

Many people worry this means they are moving backwards.

The truth is that grief often moves in waves.

You grieve the life connected to them

Bereavement is not only about losing someone.

You may also be grieving:

• Shared routines

• Future plans

• Family traditions

• Daily conversations

• A sense of normality

Loss changes more than we often realise.

Loss can affect every part of life

When we think about grief, we often think about sadness.

But grief can also bring the following:

• Anger

• Guilt

• Anxiety

• Exhaustion

• Loneliness

• Numbness

These feelings can come and go without warning.

They are not signs that something is wrong with you.

They are part of being human after loss.

Loss affects everyone differently
Others can feel overwhelmed, even months or years later.
People often expect grief to follow a straight line.

They believe they should feel better after a certain amount of time.

But grief does not work that way.

Some days feel manageable.

There is no right way to grieve.

If you are struggling after a loss, you are not failing.

You are grieving.

You do not need to absorb everything.
You do not need to respond to everything.

Rest is not avoidance.
Boundaries are not selfish.

So when we constantly feed it:
⚠ fear
⚠ conflict
⚠ negativity
⚠ pressure
⚠ comparison

the nervous system stays alert.

Many people experiencing stress still:
✔ go to work
✔ reply to messages
✔ look “fine” externally
✔ keep functioning every day

But internally they feel:
• mentally exhausted
• emotionally reactive
• disconnected
• constantly tense

High-functioning stress is still stress.

Most people think stress is caused entirely by what happens around them.

But often…
stress deepens because of the loop happening internally.

Something happens.
An emotion activates.
The mind keeps replaying it.
The body responds again.

And the cycle continues.

This is why even small things can start to feel emotionally heavy over time.
