🏏 Is your Cricket Mad child complaining of back stiffness or pain?
As the Season kicks off we are seeing a few young teenage boys and girls present with back pain. They describe a mix of sharp pain beside the spine, a “stuck” feeling, stiffness in waking in the morning, or pain taking deep breaths.
🚨Bowling is a powerful release movement that requires the upper back (thoracic spine) to allow huge rotational force while stabilising with muscle contraction. The bowler stores elastic energy by rotating and side-flexing the trunk which causes huge torsional load through this area. The paraspinal muscles on the bowling side brace repeatedly while the joints between the ribs and the spine are compressed.
As the bowler lands heavily on the foot on the other side , the ground reaction force rapidly travels:
ankle → knee → hip → pelvis → thoracic spine → shoulder → arm….The thoracic spine becomes the transfer point between hips and shoulder.
As Chiropractors we are uniquely placed to resolve all these mechanical issues, and check for other imbalances such as poor Glut strength/pelvic obliquety that may be contributing to it.
🙌 We are really good at this! Book in to see Lucy or Nicole if any of these symptoms sound familiar
